95 4runner brakes

I was replacing the pads on the front and noticed that the caliper piston on one side was stuck, so I replaced it with a new one from Schmucks Auto. The new caliper came with an instruction sheet but no reference to the wide retaining spring that goes on top to hold the pins in line and keep the pads from moving around. I have seen this type of retainer before on either BMW or Mercedes (i can't remember cause i have done a number of brake jobs on both) and I just finished doing a brake job on my wife's ES300 Lexus and it was totally different from this truck. Does anybody know which way the spring retainer is supposed to face? I Looked in an older Toy Truck book and it made no mention of it..Pete Walls
