first off, NO! a 30 amp fuse in everything may not set the wires on fire, but some of the things on the other end of the wires might go buh-bye. I say get out (or pick up on ebay like I had to) the 'ol owners manual get a variety pack of fuses, and replace them to spec. Probably not the source of your problem, however. I have the same problem. I assume you have a manual transmission. If thats the case, there is a reverse light switch mounted on the topish of the transmission. Its a cheap part, but a fiddly repair. My mechanic told me he'd do it for me for $50 and I'll take him up on that when I get my clutch master cylinder replaced this month. Also, I'd advise you to pick up the factory repair manuals (not just the Haynes one or whatever), ebay is also a good place to check for that.

X2 on getting your fuses back to stock specs. Who ever put 30 amp fuses in every circuit is suffering from some mental disease. The purpose of a fuse is to help protect electrical circuits. A 30 A fuse in a 10 amp circuit is asking for trouble, I am suprised nothing has melted or caught fire.

Also check your grounds in addition to checking back up switch.

there is link to online service manuals in my sig, you can find wiring diagrams there too.

A few years later, and I also came across this problem. My back up lights worked fine cuz I saw them reflect in a window, then one night whent to back up and pitch black. look in books for fuse location naa!.Useless , so checked. plug connection on reverse switch w/test lite.Nothing, rubbed end on frame harder ,made contact, light glowed orange. Argg! ,took out digital volt meter set to DC scratched frame somemore 5 volts ,scratched harder 12.4 volts. So 365000mi. I need to change the reverse switch on my 93 pick up.

Before you replace the switch, try to see if it can be cleaned. 365000 miles worth of dirt may keep contacts from making good connection.
Also verify that you're getting full 12V on the other side of the back-up switch.
