'94 Pickup electrical issue

I need some help. I've got a 94 Toyota pickup that has been having an electrical issue. The other day it wouldn't fire, but then i figured out that if I turn ALL the electrical components off (lights, dome light, radio, even reverse lights) it would fire up and run. However, when I turned any electrical component on(even putting it in reverse) it died. After this I grounded the negative battery terminal which hadn't been grounded in who knows how long, and everything works fine. So here's my question, does it sound like grounding the negative battery terminal fixed the problem or delayed an inevitable electrical problem?

Could be a little of both. Check all your major grounds & run a voltage check of your alternator under load.
