I have a 1994 4runner i acquired about a month ago. It drove fine for about two weeks then one day started it up and put it into drive and it started slipping then jumped into first gear and shifted to second but would not go into third or overdrive even after it warmed up. I just replaced all the shift solenoids and replaced tranny fluid. Worked fine for a few days then started doing it again. The weird thing is if i let it sit for an hour or so it starts up and shifts fine. Has anyone else ever had this problem? What do i need to do to fix this? Any help would be appreciated.

side note: when it does this it jerks hard into reverse making the tires bark and then shifts hard into drive but then slips and jumps into first gear then shifts to second gear and wont go past 30 mph and will not shift into third or overdrive.

 

What codes do you have? Why did you replace the shift solenoids?

 

I didn't get any codes. I read a few forums listing this problem I am having and it said the soleniod is usually the problem. How do you find out if it has a code for a transmission problem?

How did you manage to replace the solenoids without even looking in the manual?
