94 22re motor And trans replacement

I've got a 94 4wd with a bad 22re and a bad w56. I have replacement motor with trans still attached and transfer case still on it.
A local mechanic says theres not enough room to put it in as one unit and I have to put them in seperate.
I would rather not. Anyone ever do this?
