94 22re Brake Light & Batt Light + Overheating

Hello all!!! I am looking for some suggestions here.

First let me thank everyone in this forum for all the great advice! This is a fantastic forum and I always come "back to the well" whenever I have questions.

Here's my problem. I have a 94 4x4 toyota p/u with a 22re. I'm driving along today and all of a sudden my brake light AND my battery light turn on. Didn't think much of it, and I figured it was the alternator. About 15 minutes later, my water temp started nudging up. Within 5 minutes, the temp was 3/4 of the way to the red. For the next 30 or so miles the temp lowered and raised between 1/2 and 3/4.

I stopped a few times to take a look, and there was no apparant coolant leaks everything looked normal.

I bought this truck about 11 months ago. - By the second month I owned it , it overheated on me and I replaced the radiator, hoses, water pump.

The truck ran great for about 3 more months, it started overheating again , took it back to the shop and replaced the thermostat.

Truck ran great for about another 3 monts, then it started overheating again. This time a blown Head Ga$ket.

3 months and 2000 miles after a new head job, hg, fan clutch, I come to today and now my dash lit up with the brake light and alternator/battery light shortly followed by overheating.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I would stop by a parts store and have my charging system checked as the temp was not the only gauage acting up. Like you were thinking a dying alt can cause that.

From there I would feel all the hoses, top and bottom rad hoses and the heater core hoses going into the fire wall. All should be close to the same temp, if you find one that is cooler, you may find a hint. Yes the bottom rad hose should be a little cooler than the top. But it shouldn't be a big time differance.

Near as I can tell from the pictures I have on my hard drive without going out to check under my hood, it appears the water pump and the alternator are both turned by the same fan belt.

That is the only link between the temperature of the engine and the charging system that I know of.

Now I have to wonder if the alternator froze up and heated the belt up really bad or if the belt just came really loose so that neither the water pump or the alternator is turning right...

I'd start with the belt.
