93 22re clogged fuel filter or fuel pump? (also starter problem)

Hey guys, I've been roll starting my truck primarily for the last several months to get it to start, with the common starter problem (it clicks and click and then finally turns over and starts). I need to pull out the starter and do the rebuild. But the other day I tried to roll start it and got a putter-putter and then nothing, and when I have been able to get the starter to work it won't start the truck. I hit the pedal and smell gas so I figure the fuel pump is working. I just a week or two ago put in some gas out of a can that may have had dirt or something in it, and the truck had been missing when accelerating for a while, so I'm thinking that this is a clogged filter issue. Do fuel filters cause this kind of massive failure? Anything else I should be looking at (I don't have a multimeter).

Thanks

You may have an ignition switch going bad.

I would suggest a starter relay wired in separately from the ignition switch wired so the ignition switch turns on a relay which in turn connects the battery to the starter solenoid instead of having the starter solenoid draw all its current through the key switch.

yeah that's something I hadn't thought of. When the starting problem began, a few times the starter would seem to get stuck on and make noise until I switched the key off. so I'm still assuming the starter is going bad. My replacement solenoid contacts get here tomorrow and I'll try to get the starter out and replace them then, so we'll see. I guess I'll be halfway to replacing the fuel filter so I'm gonna do that while I'm at it. I just hop it's not the pump, I just filled the tank (d'oh!). I don't know what I'm gonna do with 18 gallons of gas.

better yet, drop by a pool supply place and ask if they'll give you a few 7-gallon plastic buckets with lids. Definitely not a long-term storage solution, but you're talking a couple of days max. Then pitch-'em.
