Really all you need to do is get power down from the battery to the starter weather it's the harness or power from a hot wire then put the clip(exciter) wire from the starter and turn the key

OK.
So I am being serious here.
All I have to do is hook up to my battery and turn the key (for a moment). I have a long list of things to do today and a short amount of time to do them, but cetainly putting the battery in and doing this trick would only take a few seconds.
But.....before I try that I have to get a new breaker bar and a 6 point 19mm socket.

Hey, I don't know if I can do this and certainly if I should not, please, somebody tell me.
But, just like everybody else, my brother-in-law is feeling the financial pinch and is selling his 4runner. He bought it used about a year ago and the only repair that I know of was a new O2 sensor and new tires(about 3 weeks ago).

He has it on craigslist, I saw it a little while ago and thought what better audience than TOYOTA junkies.
So, here it is.......

You've GOT to be kidding me!
Is that starter seriously gonna work? I have so much stuff unplugged that I don't know what the hell I was unplugging and it's gonna still work? I was sure I was way too far gone for that.
Here I am thinking I have to defibrillate the damn thing while laying on the garage floor and trying not to die with 2 live wires to 2 bolts or something like that.
I seriously am too much of a pessimist or I am over-thinking the hell out of it. At least I don't have to get under the truck.

harley's right, there isn't a lot that goes into making the starter turn. one wire goes directly to the battery, the other goes to ground. however, the problem with my little circuit i just described is that there's no way to turn it off. which is where SWITCHES come in to play. hench "ignition switch" and "neutral start/clutch relay switch" (depending on auto/manual tranny). you certainly COULD just "jump start" your starter, but i don't know if i would. just plug it in and turn the key. that way you have full power to control when it turns OFF as well as on, which is probably more important.

only 1 way to find out I guess.
Not to disregard what you say, i did post the question on another thread about if anyone has been this far into it and still done the tap the starter trick.
today WAS payday, but not so good
so i'm not sure what if anything I am going to buy or do. but talking about it is still free
and I probably will stand in gas.........it's getting colder (and snowing today......ARRRRGHHHHH!)

hahaha, that's why i STARTED mine a COUPLE WEEKS ago, so i could have it FINISHED before the cold and the snow came. hehehe, just messin'. my first head gasket change back when i was 16 took a year and a 1/2. literally.
as for the crank bolt, i don't think you have any other option at this point other than the starter. you gotta get that darn thing off. just do it to it and move on!
also, i know i've said it before in this thread, but just to stress it yet again since you are getting VERY close to this point, when you turn the starter, it will no longer be in TDC. make SURE you remember to put it back into TDC before attaching the cam to the crank via the chain! this is VITAL!
also, tuck this one away for a little later. when you DO get it back in one piece, it's a good practice to slowly turn it over by hand BEFORE you try to start it to make sure it fully rotates TWICE around so you are sure you don't have pistons contacting valves. (do this by simply turning the crank bolt). and it's much easier to do if you pull the spark plugs first, so then you aren't fighting compression.

OK, it's tucked away.
But ya kinda lost me at "the turn it 2 times" part.....you mean once I get the head on to make sure i don't have stuff mixed up. Because, if i'm not totally wrong, the piston moves twice for each cam rotation or is it the other way around.
I'm talking to you on 2 threads and I'm getting nothing done today.....I'll be a dead man.

Too much foreplay! Actually I broke stuff (tools) with my valiant efforts, so I had to stop and wait for pay-day.
I'm heading out in about an hour to do some running around, I think I could at least get a new breaker bar and 19mm 6-point socket without bankrupting us

this is the absolute LAST thing i did before i started the truck up. you could (and probably should) do it as soon as the head is on and the timing chain is on both the crank and cam sprockets. turn it twice because it takes 2 rotations of the crank for BOTH valves to move. once for intake, once for exhaust. you don't know or care when either happenes at this point, assuming you did everything right with TDC and timing, you just want to make sure that both valves moved and that neither contacted the piston head.

Thanks for the info ^^^^^^
I do have a concern about the starter thing....I have an open fuel line, I'm assuming I'm going to spray fuel......that part seriously concerns me.
I would rather hear of some method of "defibrillating" the starter like I had imagined.
In reality, you know the 1st thing I'm gonna do with a new breaker bar is to try to do it myself.

yes, open fuel line means spraying fuel. pretty easy to get around though. unplug the fuel pump connecter. on my truck, the connectors are on top of the gas tank. on my truck, it IS possible to get to them without removing the gas tank (which you don't want to do, cuz trust me, it'll open up a whole lotta other issues).
or, duh, i just thought of this while typing that ^^^^^^^, just pull the fuse for the fuel relay. problem solved.

Jumper cables!!!
Hook one up to the positive on the starter and just clip the neg to the body somewhere. Then put the neg on the bat and tap the pos on the bat.
Should work but may not kick the bendix though.
Never done this...

faster. yeah, I'll pick ya up in my sweet caddy and get lumpy on the way back.
