92 4 Runner Stalling

I recently had to replace mass air meter when my truck would stall as i put in drive. Toyota shop seemed to fix issue but after a cold start the next day it started to buck in second and third gear then hesitate and die. Took a bit too start back up hesitates a little. more and then clears up and drove fine the remainder of the day. Next day, same issue after cold start. ...dies when accelerating then starts ...blows alot of smoke and runs good the rest of day. Also I notice a heavy odor of gas off and on and a tendancy to switch on to higher gears earlier than it should. Any ideas what is causing this issue?

Is your CEL working? Have you checked for stored codes (do the easiest stuff first). Is the timing set correctly?

And if you originally took it to a Toyota shop to replace your Vane Air Flow Meter (you don't have a mass air meter -- different technology), why not take it back to them to give them a chance to fix it?

Ok so I took the truck back to toyota. I get the feeling they just dont want to work on my truck. They quoted me 2400.00 (more than the book value) to check all the wiring in the harness as they now want to blame it on an electrical issue. The problem I am having is different than before however. It starts fine, idles fine, it now stalls and dies when accelerating at about 2500-3k RPM. Before this issue started I attempted to replace the TPS. I disconnected the top screw but the bottom screw was stripped so I was forced to reaatach the old tps. I also attempted to remove the PCV valve but after trying with regular pliers I realized I would need angled pliers so I left the original. The next day this new stall left me stranded and forced to tow back to the dealership. I am not getting anywhere with Toyota and plan to have it towed back to my house and try to figure this out myself.....any help or suggestions here would be deeply appreciated. After spending 500.00 on air meter I really want to get this issue resolved. The engine only has 3k miles and the truck runs great otherwise, really hate to salvage it.

The issue sounds like a vacuum leak to me. If the dealer, worked on your Toyota, fixed the issue and its running bad again, I would take it back to them as it sounds like they did something wrong. A diagnostic from the dealer is only about $60 and by them charging you 2K to check, they must be lazy or just dont care.

As far as 2nd & 3rd gears bucking, your idle might be too high as mine was set at 1000rpm and one morning my 4runner bucked when I put it in Reverse and Drive or it could be a transmission issue of some kind.

could be a leak in the intake piping, weak spark, or fuel filter/pump/relay
