Hi,
I noticed that my runner has a hard time accelerating from a dead stop. I took it to try and get the smog check done yesterday and it failed. The tech said that it could not reach the required speeds of 15mph and 25mph while on the dyno. He suggested I check the timing and to check if I have a plugged cat. Are there any other things I should look into? Any help would be appreciated.

BTW it is a V6 with an auto.

If the truck has a lot of miles on it, it would probably be a good idea to replace the cat, also give it a complete tune up, cap, rotor, plugs, plug wires, change the oil, and replace the fuel filter. You might also consider replacing the 02 sensor, and also check the timing.

 

Thanks, it turns out that the dist was not in right. at first i was only able to set it to 7 deg. ended up repositioning it per one of the threads and it worked out for me. It holds steady at 10deg. This is my very first 4runner. are there any inexpensive upgrades to gain power?

Inexpensive 3.0L power upgrades?
Not really...they are pricy at best and the power gain is minimal.
You could try headers next time you do the head gaskets...it's easer to get to then.

I recomend the 3.4L swap someday...plenty of upgrades if wanted but has plenty of power out of the box.

 

how expensive is it to do the 3.4L swap? will it still pass smog?

 

Basing on your avatar picture I think the first mod for you should be some new rear coil springs to get rid of that classic 2nd Gen 4Runner azz sag. Other than that, welcome

You would want to check with a local shop to get details on smog...but here in Colorado you bet...newer engine...sometimes if they are placed in a runner that already had a V6 they never notice the differance.

You can pick up the engine and trans for around 2-2500 used...or less...Drive shafts around 500 or so, then have a fabricator weld in motor mounts and trans mounts and place the engine / trans...12-18 hours labor....then go from there..depending on what gauges you want and so on.

It's best if you can do the work your self...or most of it.
