89 4runner IFS ADD or not

I have a 89erunner that i purchased a couple of months ago and it has the live axle hubs for the ADD setup but there is no vacumm actuator on the axle. My thinking is that it was a auto hub and they put the ADD hubs on it. I know when in 2H I cannot turn the drive shaft freely. I think that the differential is always turning as well as the drive shaft. I think putting some manuel hubs on will fix the problem. just want to make sure I am on the right track here. thanks

I didn't think the ADD came out in the 4runners until '90. Is yours a 1st gen body? If so, it may have the automatic hubs where you have to do the reverse and forward shuffle to unlock...

thats what i was thinking but it has the live axle hubs on it now, I am thinking that it had auto hubs stock and someone changed the hubs to the ADD type but now my diff and drive shaft are always turning.

My 86 had ADD hubs when I got it and am pretty sure they were stock. They unlocked in reverse, no vacuum components.

I think the hubs that you had were called auto hubs, they did unlock in reverse.

ADD(Automatic Disconnecting Differential) <As far as i know didn't exist on toyotas till 90 and a few 89 trucks. The old pre-90's yotas with the automatic locking hubs worked on a racheting effect and working with the t-case.

what the hell?!

That looks like some yahoo put a drive flange on to replace, which probably broke like mine did, the auto hub. Take it apart and see whats in there and get the right parts to put on there...

My bad, yea with a Drive Flange like that your axle shaft and front differential are always going to turn as well as your front drive shaft.

Well i just removed my ADD hub locks and I am driving it without anything on there till I get my manuel locks..I have some being shipped now so it will only be a few days. I just put the center cap back on to keep stuff out of the bearings. What a difference it made unlocking the axles, it drives much better, exspecially on the freeway. I will get some pics when i get my manuel hubs. thanks for any help.

make sure you get IFS manual hubs. The body on them are slightly longer (or deeper) than the solid axle versions.
