89 4 runner auto trans troubles

Ok, so I bought this 4 runner knowing it had transmission problems. the truck runs fine, starts right up, and runs good.
When you shift the truck into anything drive, reverse, 1,2 whatever it does nothing, no change in engine speed, no funny noises nothing.
I made sure that all the linkages and wires where hooked up correctly, everything seems to be fine, but I have no movement whatsoever.

My original thought was that the guy I bought it from didn't install the torque convertor, but I separated the engine and transmission today and there was a convertor.

I have another convertor and transmission to swap in but I really don't want to if I don't have to.

Thanks for listening to my tale of woe, any ideas or things for me to check?

Didn't install the torque converter? You do know if the converter wasn't there fluid would just pour out of the front of the trans.
Anyway how does the fluid look? Smell? Level okay?

See if there's fluid in the converter.

I've seen it before, guy doesn't put fluid in converter before installing and wonders why the trans doesn't work.

Yes but when your running the engine, the pump in the transmission pumps fluid through the converter and the rest of the trans.
OP, does the vehicle even try to move when the engine is revved while in drive or reverse?

Well, two things. If the converter wasn't filled with a couple quarts it could have been damaged if put in gear before the front pump filled it. The other is if there's no fluid even after running the engine then the front pump is afu.

The truck doesn't even try to move. The engine doesn't bog down you can Rev it up and still nothing. High range low range it feels like there is no connection between the engine and transmission. I know I probably just need to go ahead and swap out the transmission, I was just hoping that somebody with more Toyota specific experience might have some Insight
