hey guys, been rebuilding my 92 3vze power steering pump.

I have two springs. manual only shows one. we think it fits between port union and the flow control valve but I'm not sure.

Please look at pic and tell me if this is where it goes.

Another dry pump here! Rebuilt at ~225,000 miles. Biggest effort went into removing the pulley. Pickle fork method worked, but no gentle tapping for me--took a mighty whack. Dinged up the front of the pump a little bit, but no apparent adverse effects.

 

thanks foir the write up made it so it wasnt so overwhelming.
pulley was stubborn removal.
threw some paint on the resevoir.
no leaks after bleed.
had a question though, how warm should the pump be after 10 minutes of driving?

 

I am in the middle of doing this to the pump on my '93 pickup and it's even easier than I thought. I've been putting it off for some time.

I have run into an issue though - the half circle 'key' that sit on the end of the shaft to locate the pulley stayed on and I didn't think much about it. When driving out the shaft I marked up in the inner bushing pretty good.

Is there a part number to get this bushing or am I looking at a new pump? Or does anyone have the specs on this bushing - though I'm not sure it would be worth the time/money to have one fabbed up.

Im in the process of doing the rebuild and i had the same issue with scratching the inner bushing when I was tapping the shaft out.. I didn't see anything in the repair manual that said anything about removing the half circle notch/"key" before removing the shaft. I scratched it up pretty good but I'm hoping the orings seal off that bushing the shaft goes through so it wont leak? Ive reassembled the pump but I'm wating for the glue to dry on one of the air control valve prongs (yes I snapped one off during removal).. Soo tomorrow I will know if it leaks out front from the shaft. Fingers crossed.

So if you want to pay three times the rebuild kit to get a part rebuilt by random-guy just counting down hours till he gets to go home..

On the other end. You can pocket 50, hangout in the garage maybe have a beer teach your kid a skill and get them out from in front of a "screen", blah blah blah.

We hang out on THIS site because all of us like to work on our trucks. So we're even willing to spend a little more for the chance to do it ourselves.

But we're not masochistic. That "random-guy" has done this job before; maybe hundreds of times. This is my first time. Some jobs are just so messy and otherwise awful, I'll happily pay a professional. (Rebooting a front-axle half-shaft comes to mind - I say, buy the rebuilt..)

So the lesson is: it pays to shop around. Put a dollar number on your time (it's okay to be $0.00 / hr) Do what you want to do, when you have the chance.
