I've had this truck for a few years and have gotten used to its quirks. When it's cold I have to pump it at least 10 times for it to start up quickly. When it's really cold it might take 12 or 15 pumps. Do you guys think the accelerator pump is bad? Can you usually get a replacement without having to buy an entire rebuild kit?
Although it's just a work truck and I'm not interested in performance, the motor has always seemed weak. My 91 Nissan 4cyl pickup would run rings around it. It runs fine, it just doesn't make much power.

Sounds like your choke isn't functioning on cold startup. I'm sure the carb could use a rebuild. Wait, an 88 with a 22r?

I think it's a 22R. I'll double check, though. As far as the choke is concerned, I believe that it is working fine. It seems to be a two stage choke that cuts the initial idle back after the engine has run a minute or two. It then cuts out altogether when the engine is warm.
The reason I suspect the pump is that in most of the vehicles I've owned more than two or three pumps on the pedal would flood the motor. Also, romping on the pedal when needed, such as passing doesn't seem to have much effect. Other than that, the engine runs just fine, but never has an abundance of power.

 

have you checked the fuel bowl level to see if it is leaking ? the carb may be pumping back up each mourning.

Yup, 22R's were found in trucks up to 88/89. Not 100% sure, but someone should know for sure on here.

 

I HAVE an 88 2wd pickup with a 22R in it. Deathcougar would know when they kept using it.

They used the carb in the 2wd varieties I believe into the 90's. Maybe DC can pop on here and give a confirmation.....

 

I believe you are correct, it was a 92 2wd.

 

Swamp fox- I haven't checked the float bowl for leaks. It hadn't occurred to me. It would just about have to be a crack in the casting, right? I don't think there are any other outlets.
Thanks a lot for the carb information, 4x4! I have it saved in a word document now. I have rebuilt some carbs in the past and I agree 100% with your methodology. I don't have any off road experience, though.
Everyone else- I checked and it is indeed a 22R. I've heard it is a rugged little engine. I need to do some work to it, but nothing major.

MWBOB, you discribed my 1986 problem to a T.

My choke is working fine, last week I replaced the acc. pump (you can get them from NAPA with out buying the entire kit) but I got the kit anyway from another store closer to me.

It has helped with the cold start, but I do still have to pump it.

I will also tell you I replaced the fuel pump last week, and set the mixture. All this has helped my MPG, but it is still as week as a cat.

I have heard a lot on here about a bad EGR valve can cause the engine to loose power. But I have not tried anything yet...

my truck was loosing fuel when i parked it. i checked the fuel bowl over with a magnifying glass and could not find a problem.the only thing i could find that would explain the problem was a fuel shutoff solenoid leak. i replaced the part with a used one and put a new o ring on it.it has been starting well ever sense.

 

I was having this kind of trouble with my '88 2wd until I gave my entire carb (and the throttle linkage) a liberal spraying with carb cleaner, started up with only a couple pumps on the pedal in the winter but a carb rebuild is likely in my future since it still sticks a bit. I also ran a tank of gas with that carb cleaner additive, did less for the carb than me actually spraying everything down with the Gunk. Apparently those fuel shutoff solenoids enjoy causing various troubles too, but mine seems to be working fine.
