87 turbo diesel questions

I just got my first toyota,a 87 extra cab 4x4 turbo diesel pickup. My plans are to make it into a bush crawler. Planning of hoping up the engine a bit, lift, gears, and toss some 33's on it.

I built lots of dodges and chev duramax trucks up, but never a inport.

I like to put a solid axle on it maybe even 4link it one day. One thing that i am wondering is will a 85 or less frame and rolling chassis bolt right up to my cab an drive train with some mods. Reason im asking is my frame from the front of the rear spring mounts and back is pretty rotten.

Any helpful tips would be great.

Thanks,

it should work out for you i know the body mounts are the same really the only difference between them is the front suspension set up also if you are getting the axles and housings right around 83 to 85 is when they had a stronger rear axle in them

Ok so I found a 85 frame in really good condition, but it is for a 2 wheel drive. Wonder if it would work minus the front suspension work I'd have to do

So my plans of a four link are gone, the girl wants to have it legal for the road.
So who's sas kit to go with I have found two so far all pro and trail gear. Opinion on what one to go with?

I'd like to build it from scratch, but most of my tools are in storage still in another town and my new shop still needs work before I go get the rest.

So my little 87 diesel is getting close to a start now, got a 85 2wheel frame and 85 front and rear axles with 4.10 all in really good condition. Few things i am wondering is what gears I should go with for the 33s and lockers, also what rear axle is better the 85 or the 87.
Thinking of getting the trail gear 4"sas kit.
Will be posting pictures once I get going on it.

Well, not real knowledgeable about the 2lt's powerband, what gears are stock in your 87 axle? If it's 4.10, you could probably go with the rule of thumb for gearing:4.10 for stock size, 4.56 for 31's, 4.88 for 33's, and 5.29 for 35's and larger.

The 87 axle is wider, same 8" ring gear, so I'd use it and the 85 front axle with the wheel spacers included in whichever sas kit you go with. As far as which kit, I don't have much input on the All Pro, Trail Gear is considered the most complete with knuckle service parts included. Hope that helps some, more people with sas experience could probably give more info on the kits, though.
