87 4Runner 22re ignition hard start

When I turn the key the acc and start on positions turn on all the right accessories and light options, power door locks and windows work at the right turn points. But when I crank the key to start it just goes click. I can turn it and turn it and turn it for 5mins at all different angles and pressure with my figures but no turn over until randomly it will suddenly start??? Sometimes it starts first time hot or cold sometimes it takes 10mins and a thousand turns...... same thing with the neutral saftey switch engaged or not same thing with shifter in neutral or in gear same with clutch in or out, random start problems.... anyone have ideas???? Thanks

Are you talking about the Starter not always engaging or truck cranks but just wont start?

If I am understanding it right, it is just clicking. You can try cleaning the Starter Relay Contacts and that helps. Also replacing the contacts in the starter helps some too. To fix the problem for good, I follow RADS fix for it. I will see if I can find the information that I do to fix it.

Getting cover off, I used wire cutters to bend the tabs up on the cover. The rubber seal really makes it tough to get off. Luckily the wires are soldered on real well, I used a screw driver to work around the edges of the seal to help free the cover.

Take a finger nail file or some fine grit sandpaper and clean the contacts.

I did Rays Starter Upgrade. Last week Misty had mine at the store and it would not start for her. I showed up and jumped in and it started right up. I asked her if she was turning the key, had the key in the ignition, and even had the keys, lol. It has done this to me before as well so I was just teasing her. I have replaced the Solenoid Contacts and cleaned the Starter Relay Contacts as well and it still will just click every once in awhile. For me I can usually start tapping on things and getting it going. Misty doesnt quite understand how to get around something like that and the clicking issue is frustrating.

I got Ray on the phone and he stepped me thru on doing the upgrade and what all was happening. He did a great job on explaining how the electric flowed that I could understand it. Thanks Ray for your help. I had just gotten anotherrr new phone as I dropped my other new phone and broke it. He had to contend with me trying to learn all of that as well. One time even trying to find the key pad to call back.

If you look at the plug with eyes, mustache and a smile, the one you need to cut is the right side of the mustache as you are looking at it, hehe

What I am trying to show here is the thinnest little black wire with the red stripe is on the left. The wire on the right is the one you want to cut which is diagonally across from the red stripe wire. Going from Left, Top, Right and Bottom, it is the Right one. The wire that I cut and is where my pinky is going to get wrapped back up into the wiring harness and will not be used again.

I eventually want to run a kill switch inside the cab and to do the AFM and Battery Swap. I also have an 82 Supra AFM that I want to install when I do all of that. I feel this will fix the click only issue and Thanks Ray for taking the time to step me thru it.

To try and show how I have it and how it is routed, it comes off of the batttery with a 30 Amp Fuse connector, along fender well to the Starter Relay Plug. I have left the wires loose just for explanation purposes but did route it tighter and cleaner.

Terry, O.P. has "Click-only" issue

Terry and helidriver

The starter relay wiring on first-gen 22RE had been absolutely proven wrong so, until helidriver has corrected the starter relay wiring as you described above...

(1) I would hold off on cleaning the starter relay because it did not fix my problem, either, and
(2) I would also hold off on the more involved, solenoid contact replacement,

Cheers!

I had the exact same issue. After fussing around with the starter contacts and cleaning plugs (which didn't help in my case) I just purchased the Hot-Shot Starter relay. 20 minute install and I never had a problem again.

Red face

I would guess if I look at the EWD I should be able to figure this fix out .

I have the starter out for a rebuild might be a good time.

I have it saved but I think it was like 2 computers ago .

hey, I had this same problem with my truck, all I did was take the wires off the battery terminals, cleaned them and cleaned the battery terminals, starts up now.
Just an easy thing to do before diving into the internals of the starter etc.

No. Turn the key to start and it DOES NOT click or crank. Everything just goes dead. Then let go of the key and all power to acc are back on. Then try to turn over again and again everything just goes dark, NO CLICK AND NO CRANK.

Do not underestimate what even minor looking corrosion can do. My own experience here.

Good battery. Terminals super clean. I did go ahead and take them off wire brush them and tighten all the accessory cables coming off the possitive. Haven't had an issue yet over the couple days.
