87 2wd with g662 axle code....

hello,
ive got a 2wd truck with a 3.07 ratio. im curious what size carrer bearings it has. i have seen a few carriers that have a 50mm diameter and others that are 45mm. the truck is a 4cyl 4 speed with the 2 pinion setup. i am hoping to go up to a 4.56 gear to accomodate my 31x10.50 tires. but ive heard that anything smaller than 3.42 wont fit anything larger than that. ive been looking at these...

anybody have any advice on which one will fit my truck?

It is an 8" Toyota 4wd rear you have basically. You can put any gears you want into them. The G in the G662 code stands for 8" ring gear.

I do not think that is an 8" diff......i have never found those gear ratio codes to be wrong, and yet this one seems to be. The G662 was for 4 speed base model trucks...that means it should be a 7.5" diff. Strange!

Actually I own a G662 3rd member and it is an 8" diff. The "G" stand for 8" ring gear. I counted the splines since I got the whole axle out of a 1 ton 2wd truck and the splines are 30 just like the 4wd trucks. So he has an 8" diff.

Not an answer but more questions. I have a 1990 Toyota 4Runner 22Re engine 2wd with a manufacture date of 08/89. The codes are G252/A44D. Everything is stock on it, but I am in need of a differential. Based on the Gcode I have an 8' 4:556 ratio and I'm wondering if I can swap a differential of a 4x4 with the same gear ration without any modifications? I am heading to the junkyard to try and find one and I don't want get something that wount fit. Any help would be great.

You sure about that code? 2wd trucks never came with that gear ratio. Is the cab original to the truck? You can check to see if the VIN on the dash is the same on the frame.

2WD and 4WD 1990 4Runners with the 22R-E and automatic transmissions had 4.56 gears(axle code G252).

2WD 1990 4Runners with the 3VZ-E and automatic transmissions had 3.90 gears(axle code G074).

4WD 1990 4Runners with manual transmissions had 4.10 gears, or 4.56 gears if they had 31" tires(axle codes G292, G294, G252, G254)

From the 1990 4Runner brochure found here.

BTW, 4Runners don't have cabs.

He said he has a 2wd truck, not a 4Runner. Where did you get a 4Runner from? 4Runner's are on a 6 lug 4wd platform even if they are ordered as 2wd, they still use the 8" rear. Also, 4Runner's never came with a 4 speed manual trans.
