Looking for advice here on my sons truck.(I'll preface this with my mechanical skills are minimal so go easy on me :-)

87 PU with 22re -
Truck was running until he slid on some ice and pealed his driver side fender off striking another truck.
After that, Cold start - truck will run at high idle until warms up and drops idle then dies.
-or- if you touch the gas at all and let off and let it idle back down, it stalls out.

If I jump fp B+ truck runs ( low idle is little hard/shakey) but I can hit gas and let off and it will continue to run.
If I pull the high tech paperclip out, hit gas, it dies right away.

Done so far:
Replaced AFM
Replaced Fuel Filter
Replaced Air filter
Validated EFI Fuse good
Replaced Circuit Open Relay
Replaced plugs
Replaced PCV valve
Checked all fuses/wiring
Checked for Vacuum leaks (no gauge) only hand/air/smoke test)
Checked wiring on driver side were impact occured.

I know the ECM will shut-off Fuel Pump if airflow not sufficient.
Question: What else can cause fuel pump to shut-off? Also, I'm assuming the ECM is shutting off fuel pump since the jumper works, or am I mistaken and something else could be occuring?

What kind of shape is the AFM plug in.

It is not really the ECU shutting off fuel it is the switch in the AFM when that opens the fuel pump shuts off

The parts you replaced were tested and had failed?/

What were they replaced with New Toyota parts ??

Jumping B+ to FP bypasses all the contacts and safeties and energizes the fuel pump

It can be the EFI Fuse the EFI relay

The Circuit Opening relay the AFM switch

Took a hit on the left side did you check the ground on the door post??

Did the fuses get knocked loose in the sockets you might have a good fuse but poor connection

Efi Relay might be as well

any of these not working will not allow the pump to run

AFM Plug was good - wires all good, clean. Replaced AFM with NEW Toyota AFM part.
All parts were replaced with new Toyota parts.
Yeah, I know, I'm throwing parts at it without really knowing what is the main issue.
But trying to eliminate them 1 by 1.

EFI Fuse looks good,
Circuit Open Relay and AFM - replaced with New - those were my first guesses.

I did not check ground on Door - good suggestion -
I checked Fuse panel and connections, and inspected/re-seated all fuses on driver side kick panel.

Where is the EFI relay on an 87 22re pickup - I checked main engine box fuses - no EFI listed, I replaced the Fuel Pump relay(Open Circuit) behind glove box passenger side kick-panel. But I can't find the EFI Relay on this truck. Found the EFI fuse in fuse box.

 

Who did all the work you mentioned above?

When you try to crank, does the circuit opening relay behind the glove box click? If it does not, check it and the wiring between it and the AFM AGAIN.
Here's how the C.OR. and the AFM work that has very much to do with your issue.

How did you check the fuses? Looked at them? Measured voltage on both sides of the fuses? Measured resistance of the fuses? Got a voltmeter?

I was the one that did all the work mentioned.
Yes, relay clicks. I found some other info to test (after I replaced) on listening for click, as well as listening for fuel pump turning on, etc.

Fuses were manual inspection for burn-out - no ohm testing, I do have a voltmeter I can test for resistance. I believe I found those specs somewhere else on what each one should be.

I'll check again for the EFI relay on driver side kick panel - but when I looked last time, I didn't see an EFI Relay.
I'll also inspect the ground wire.

BTW - great write up on the COR AFM - Gives me a better idea of things to check

 

Could be a wiring problem, old brittle wires, little bit of a pain to trace down but with a multi meter and plenty of time you can track most things pretty well even with out a wire diagram.

Just a quick check what's the voltage reading on Fp in the diag port while cranking (I think you can cheat and not press in the clutch to kick the COR but not the starter). If no volts I'd work backwards from there to COR and validate wiring connection from there to Fp, then power supply to COR (for the Fp pin) and so on.

 

It turned out to be the EFI Relay - once I could locate it - wasn't sure which one of those relays was the issue - testing showed one relay bad, Looked up the #'s - and it was the EFI Relay.
Could also wiggle it and hear the Open Circuit relay clicking as I did so. Replaced, now truck holds idle. Thanks guys for repointing me to the right area.~!
