86' starting problems

i jsut replaced my head gasket on my 86' 22re p/u, put a new starter on, new alternator, full tune up, new battery cables/ terminals (build going on now , and i want to have the truck running excellent)..i am getting fire to the electrical system, and fuel pump is working (it has a new FP, and computer) although it will not turn over at all..

i turn the key and can hear it clicking but its not turning over, lights work, and i am most definately sure my clutch is pressed in...

what is the problem ?? ignition ?? solenoid ??

You sure both wires are hooked up on the starter? There is one that bolts on and one that slides onto a prong if I remember correctly.

Check the starter... Also check out Roger's idea for a jig. Really handy.

Have you tried switching out the battery with a know good one. It may show fine for volts, but be lacking in amps. You say you have a ground wire running to the motor from the battery ground, you also have one going to the frame from the battery ground?

leave your drivers door open so the dom light is on, then tyry to start the truck. Does the dom light dim much? If yes back to the battery, it's not producing enough power.

If everything is grounded and the battery is good, I would start to question the new starter or solenoid. The ckicking is most likely the solenoid. Try tapping on the starter with a small hammer or wrench while some one has the key turned to start position. If it turns over then...it's the starter.

But the battery needs a gound wire to the frame, then the starter needs a ground, thats why the lead from the ground to the motor.

is the clicking sound coming from behind the kick panel in the passenger side feet area or is it comming from the starter itself. if it's comming from the starter i would also Question the integrity of the new starter. try tapping it with somthing while someone is holding the key forward. if it starts turning afer that it is either the starter or it's alignment with the flywheel.

the starter is BRAND new, i bought it a week ago from napa.. teh clicking is coming from around the starter, in that area.. its like i have a dead battery, but nothing is dim.. ill replace my battery since it has a 1yr warranty..

the battery is grounded at the fender, not frame (i can easily change) but this is how it was when i bought the truck..

i have a ground running from the battery to the starter instead or the motor now. and i have the positive from the battery running to the starter, and the prong on the starter is plugged in

Do a quick voltage test as noted on the web page below:

The battery should be grounded to the motor and the fender on your truck. Thats factory and thats fine.

Clicking and no turn over has always meant crap starter for me. Just because it's new doesnt mean it will work =) I've bought plenty of NEW parts that don't work.

Totally not related to a starter but i bought a drum brake cylinder and ..how scary is this ... it was faulty. Of all things on my truck, I want to freakn trust my brake parts... and to get a new one that didn't hold a seal doesnt make me very confident about NEW PARTS =)
