86 4runner turns but won't start...

So was driving my runner yesterday, it was running fine. Parked, grabbed some lunch came back and it started right up then died. Wont' start, and had to get it towed home. It turns over, so it's not dead battery etc. I've actually got another complete 86 runner that was rolled as a parts car so I can swap anything necessary, just looking for what direction to head.

Already swapped ignition switch and coil. Has new plugs in it. Has new fuel pump in it. Any other relatively easy things I should take a peak at?

I'm elbows deep under the hood now, so any help is much appreciated!

I know I know, there's a search function. I tried it but i found lots of "won't turn over" results which doesn't sound like my issue...

Oh yeah, tried a compression start as well with no luck. Not sure if that eliminates certain possibilities or not....

I'm a little ignorant here, but is the mag pickup the thing that spins around under the dist. cap? Would I need a whole new distributor or can I just replace that?

Side note, I grew up in da UP too! Houghton!

Thanks!

I just had the same thing happen to me. Drove perfect yesterday and parked it for the night and then tried to start it this morning to go to work and it wouldn't start. What did you find was the problem?

Mine ended up being the timing chain. I had another 22re anyway so I swapped it out and it's good to go. I had gone through everything before realizing it was the timing chaing though. Plugs, wires, ECU, fuses, mag pick up, etc. Learn from my mistake and pull of the dist cap and turn it over to make the the dist actually turns! If it turns, make sure their is spark. If you don't have a spare 22re laying around, I hope it's something minor!

My timing belt, hg, cap, rotor, plugs, wires, are all new within a year. The head was rebuilt a year ago also. I'm sure hoping the timing belt didn't break. I don't have a spare motor, so trouble shooting by changing out parts is gonna get costly.

So, I just took off my gas cap to check if I had fuel. I did. I put the cap back on and it started right up. What is up with that?

Check your Timing Belt to what does it look like. Usually it turn out but it doesn't fire if the Timing Belt is broken down.

Aloha! I have a similar issue I am hoping to get some help with. I am new to forums and new to 1st gen 4runners so I am learning the hard way about fixing these.
So my truck was running fine except the battery was leaking its fluid so I went to replace it. Went to Walmart and bought an equivalent battery. Put it in the truck and it wouldn't start, and I wasn't getting good connects so I replaced the terminals. After that, still wouldn't crank over. The battery was drained so I got a jump and I think the person who helped put on or removed the cables in the wrong order and perhaps fried something. At that time, I could still hear my fuel pump working and engaging when the key was turned to ACC but not anymore. I got a tow home and I replaced the spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires, and today I replaced the MSD SS blaster coil and even the COR fuse and it still won't crank over. I've tried spraying starter fluid down the weber and nothing. All the fuses tested out good. Truck was fine until I went to replace the battery so something must have happened to the electrical along the way, but I'm not even hearing the fuel pump turn on at this point. Any ideas? My email is matthansrecording@yahoo.com. I really need help getting this running ASAP. Mahalo!

Have you tried checking for ECU codez?

Also, which engine/transmission?

22R manual. I don't have a way to check any codes so I really am just playing the troubleshooting/guessing game here. I don't have the money to start replacing everything or to pay a mechanic to go to town on it.

Check ignition fuse if and/or fuel filter if cranking. If not, check starter, positive cable, ground cable, and ignition signal wire.

If it won't crank:
Using a test light. There is a small wire. on the starter (just squeeze the plug, it just slides out). Plug the test light into that small wire, and ground the light. Turn the key to start. If it lights up, starter or cables. If not, ignition switch. Provided, the main power wire is good. There will be a wire that runs from the battery to a main power distribution beside the battery. I've had that break. That breaks, whole truck goes dead.
