86 4runner questions...

I am looking at an 86 4runner 22re with 4 inch tuff country lift and 3 inch bl, any concerns I should look for (other than the normal) or any common problems with these and also how is the engine power wise and reliability? Guys I really appreciate any info or suggestions on these things.

Thanks,
T

Just look at the normal stuff and make sure everything works, the 22RE is no power house but its very reliable and with the right gearing it can hold its own quite well. check my signature below for what ive done to my 86 4Runner.

Just make sure every things there and every bolt is in its hole. check for rust under it. Don't buy a rust bucket. Make sure it runs and sounds right with no knocking. If its got a lift check it out make sure its not jerry rigged or anything. The 22re is one of the most famous and reliable engines in the world just keep oil in it and off red line. Not a fast or powerful motor but she can tow a good bit and hold her own in the 4WD area.

/me makes note to self- avoid redline....
hey wait!!! I don't wan't a vw bus to pass me. Getting passed by a VW is like -14 hit points.

I've travelled I-5 / Grapevine in 3rd at 5000 rpms many times and no problems... yet.

I dont understand why everyone thinks the 22re is so slow. Maybe its because I'm so used to it..but I can easily pass lots of people, hold 65-70 in 4th (4.10s, 31x10.5s) and get 23mpg doing so. I hit 4.5K-5 rpm daily and usually drive at 4K-4.5K 6 miles to work because its so much fun..and sounds gooooood
3.5K-5K is the sweet spot for 22res

No. I'm dead serious. I dont think its all that slow. Maybe its because I've been driving a 22re powered vehicle for like 5 years ( not a lot compared to others)..but I dont really have much else to compare it to. I drove my roommies 3rzfe, its nice but not THAT much more powerful feeling...my sister's Heep Liberty with a 3.7L v6/6spd is powerful, but still kind of slow. idk...must just be me.

Nah i was talking to abe. Sorry lol. But yea its all in the tuning for the 22r. I mean its not the fastest but she will get up and go if you want her too. If you got it tuned right with no leaks or missing yea she'll go.
