86 4 runner starting problem.

Hey everyone. I just picked up a nice 86 4runner 2 weeks ago with a 22re. Now i am having some starting problems and I hope someone can help me get this thing sorted out. Yesterday I went to start it and it fired right up, idled for a few seconds then died. When I tried to restart it nothing happened. It wont even make any kinda click, sound or try to turn over. I pulled the started and had that checked its good, The battery is good, the starter is getting 12 volts of power to it. What is the deal? Anyone have the same problem? Thanks for the help!

First things first. Get a multi-meter.
Check simple things first.
Checked your connections to battery and ground thoroughly?
Had your battery load-tested? How do you know that 12V got to starter? The thick red wire would have 12V on it but it does not get to starter motor unless starter solenoid clicks and closes its contacts.
Even if you have 12V, your battery voltage would drop once loaded, if it's no good.
Anything else has power? Headlights? Stereo?

Quick check if your fuel system is working... Have someone put ignition ins "Start" position and listen and feel if fuel pump runs.

Then go back to checking power and cranking system If you want to understand how cranking system works, pls see my signature. Cranking Schematic's there, too.

yea, I have all the other systems working. Headlights, radio ect.

When I turn the ignition there is zero noise or action whatsoever. No clicks at all.

I suspect the neutral/park safety switch. Make sure the gear shift is fully pushed forward into park and see if that makes a difference next time it happens. You may have to turn the switch on to acc and take the shifter back and firm put into park.

Bingo! I have to strongly push & hold the shifter forward in order for it to start. What can i replace to fix this annoying problem?
