Question 86 22rte. trans reverse wire question

hi, should i be getting a reading from the reverse wire when i put it in reverse? cuz im getting nothing. and what is that wire supposed to connect to? is it a signal wire to a relay or should it be a 12v output? any kind of wire schematic for the truck would be awesome! even if its not for this particularly. thanks again for the help.

On my '89, power to the reverse lights is from the Gauge fuse and has 12v to the back-up switch anytime the ignition switch is "on". There is no power in the "off" or "acc" positions.

According to my FSM, on floor shift trucks there is no relay--direct power from the fuse. My truck has a black/orange stripe wire from the fuse to the back-up switch on the transmission and a red/white stripe wire to the lights.

so where does the wire harness run? red/white wire comes from lights, i assume they come together not far from there, then heads up to the fuse box. where can i tap into them to to run a manual switch?

btw. the last post was very useful info. thanks

If you want to put in a manual switch to turn on the reverse lights I think it would be easiest to tap into the wire at the back-up switch on the transmission. You could run the wires up through the shift lever boot and mount a switch there or run the wires under the carpet to the dash and put a switch somewhere there.

If your OEM back-up switch is bad, they can be replaced for about $40 from the dealer. I just put a new one in my truck due to oil leaking out through the housing.

Here is a good site to find part numbers for anything on the truck. http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/ Put in your VIN and get vehicle-specific part numbers to take to the dealer.

Take care and good luck,
Bugs

i dont quite understand the back up switch enough to tell if it is bad. also, since the truck had a manual trans swap i believe it is the G58 trans. so its hardto search parts with my VIN. and the wire is not connected to anything. i see no other wires anywhere, suggesting where it is supposed to go. a wiring diagram of reverse wire and lights would be so greatly appreciated, and much easier for me to understand.
