I threw a rod on my 93 pickup, and in the course of tracking down parts I have come across a decent motor from a 84 Celica. Can I transplant that into my Pickup without too many issues?

I'm not going to run into any bolt differences or anything like that? the 22re didn't change that much over 10 years?

If that's the case I'll go buy it now.

 

ehh wouldnt it be a problem that celicas are front wheel drive and everything is going to be sideways?

 

Its an '84 Celica. They were RWD

that's an "early" 22RE. while it will be a bolt-in swap as far as the the engine goes, the wiring is different. you can swap the intake manifold off your '93 and the wiring, but the early engines did not have a knock sensor so you will have to figure out a way to mount that.

personally, i'd hold out for an '85 or newer 22RE to avoid any confusion.

 

I agree with Kyle_22r. I think the oil pans are different on the Celicas also. The Celicas actually have a 22REC, which is slightly different. I believe it does not have electronic spark control like the newer 22REs. I has fuel injection, but uses a vacuum advance mechanism to control the timing like the carbureted 22Rs. It would probably be worth the trouble to find a newer 22RE unless the Celica is free or something.

 

the "C" in 22REC is just california emissions designation, there were early and late versions of both.

the celica definitely has a different oil pan. it's a mid sump, rather than the rear sump on a 4x4.

as for swapping out parts I can live with that. Could you tell me where the knock sensor is on th newer 22re? I don't recall seeing it(or knowing wat it was) the last 2 times I tore it down.

I'm not worried about electronic ignition or vacuum advance as I will be using the distributor and electronics from the pickup.

essentially I will clean the motor down to block and head and attatch all the newer stuff that I can.

Worst case, it won't work at all, and I can still sell it for more than I paid.

 

The knock sensor is right below the oil filter. Here ya go..

 

actually, that's your oil pressure sender. the knock sensor is the little guy next to the fuel filter with the orange O-ring around the plug

since you want to use this engine, strip down the engine to a long block and then put your 4x4 oil pan on. also not a bad time to replace the front and rear main seals either(do the rear main while the pan is off, makes sealing the pan easier as the seal retainer makes up part of the oil pan). i'm not sure of the thread on the knock sensor but i'm fairly sure it's a regular metric(not pipe thread), find a nut of similar size and weld it to one of the upper motor mounts.

pull the celica distributor and use the one from your truck, as well as your intake manifold(better design anyway with the straight plenum). also, swap the PAIR system(the resonator/valve/piping etc) if you still have it and exhaust manifold onto the celica engine. your manifold will bolt on, but you most likely won't be able to use the center 2 holes as all early 22R engines(to my knowledge) had only 1 hole in the center.

Sorry for resurrecting my old post, but I finally got around to dropping this motor in the truck, and wanted to thank you guys for your advice.

I only had to make 2 modifications, the first as described was to find a new mount point for the knock sensor. I just brazed a 12x1.50(I think that was the thread pitch) nut onto a spare motor mount bolt and placed it in one of the empty mount holes behind the mount bracket.

Second, I drilled a hole in the exhaust manifold where the bottom stud on the new head was.

All things aside, it wasn't that difficult or painful, lets hope it lasts long enough for me to save the $4k for a create engine from LC

i have a 1990 pickup that im putting a 1984 celica motor in and i have came across a problem with locating where a hose goes on the lower intake at the front of the motor

i have a few pictures im trying to put up now but the hose is right under the two connectors next to where the thermostat goes
