I'm asking for a buddy. His 92 pickup recently died and this is the quote he got from a mechanic. The mechanic has a really good rep and is known to be honest and trustworthy. The price sounds a little high to me though but I'm not sure exactly what's involved in the job. The quote was roughly 1/2 labor, 1/2 parts.

Is the fuel pump inside the tank? That's about the only way that much labor would make sense to me.

I once swapped one on a 79 2WD Toyota Pickup (20R) and the pump was inside the tank just like yours is.

I siphoned/drained out the gas, dropped the tank, swapped the pump over, replaced the tank and then refilled with gas all in about 3 hours - that was when i was 16 and my dad was helping. The pump was something like $40 at the local Autozone.

$800 sounds high for that though. I would think half that would be enough. Call the local dealership and ask them what they would charge. At least get them to quote you a price on the pump. it really isnt hard to change out. You may want to see if you can do it youreself.

yes, and the pump on a '79 20R truck is inside the tank too! i've changed one!

it's not the most pleasant job, but if you can get the gas out of the tank(there's a drain plug in the bottom, it only takes a couple hours. i'd rather change a fuel pump than change a clutch. definitely not worth $800.

youre 4runner is easy. It has an access panel under the passenger side seat.

the runner has an access panel.

on my 85 the wires into the pump were corroded. they didn'y have to do a full job but it was only a couple hours labour

if you do do it your self use cargo straps to drop it just thought i would throw that out there

IIRC, the Toyota pump for my 79 was something like $600 from the dealer but you can get a "generic" pump from an auto parts store that fits in the stock location for about $40-$50.

Ummm... wow that's expensive. It's like a 3 hour job for a guy in his driveway with the tank full (read: HEAVY) and only a floor jack to balance it on.

If I had a high reach tranny jack and a lift (read: in a regular repair shop) it'd be about 2 hours. Elton's right - $300 installed.


It may vary by year but on my '96 that access panel was only good for getting access to the electrical and I think one of the tubes. I could never have replaced the fuel pump through it!

i had my entire tank redone not too long ago that includes, tank pump and sending unit, all new lines and new filler neck for $800, so that sounds a bit high

Yep, i've done that like 3 times now (to my '86 p/u) the last time it only took me 2 hours 15 min...all 3 times were within 2 days, oh and the tank was damn near empty lol

If i was your buddy i'd do it myself and save like $600!! Buy some New Tires!!! lol

Have him talk to the mechainic and see if that's a "Toyota Original" part or not. The dealer is very high on their parts. That might be where the problem lies. Labor should be no more than $65/hr. But even at $100/hr it should be no more than $450. Autozone has a pump for $136 and a seal for $19.

ลลลล! You could have someone fly out to where ever he lives to do it in his driveway for $800. That of course depends on the price of the airline tickets. It might be tough if he lives in Hawaii or something.

I just looked up a 92 pick-up and retail was 301 for the FP and wholesale was 217.

I agree that dropping the gastank on a Pick-up is a minor PITA......but is it worth $583 labor for someone else to do it? ZUK
