$50.00 paint job

They seem to be really proud of their paint here in ks... the only official retailer per interlux in the state wants 39 a quart for it! Where did you guys get it from where it was cheap, or at least sold in gallons? I was also wondering... how much did you use on your 4runner?

ok, here is what i found out. i sanded with 220 grit, washed it real good, took a blower to it, and dried all the cracks. next day i wiped it down with OMS, and then took a tack rag to it. rolled the paint on, and then wiped it down with a foam brush dipped in the paint, if you have some areas that don't cover well, hit it with the brush, or just roll the whole panel again. the next morning i repeated the whole process. i have a few runs in paint and a little orange peel where i forgot to go over it with the foam brush. over all i am very happy. i covered up my patches and added some protection from the weather. the paint has a good shine, and looks like an enamel paint job, meaning, it is not glass smooth. you could wet sand it with 600 up to 1000 grit and just about get those results. i had a lot of prep, 10 hours i guess because of those damn strips and some bondo work. took about two hours each time i painted it. i am going to build a roof rack in the next couple of weeks and when it is done i am going to wet sand it then put one more coat on, and the wet sand it again, then polish it. total investment, paint, sandpaper, rollers, brushes, tray . $80.00 roll the paint two directions, back and forth and up and down.

Great job! For a offroad truck it turned out great, although not perfect like the factory was its damned good!
i think you should outline all the steps and supplies in 1 single post.

here are the steps for my paint job.
1. wash the truck
2. do body work
3. remove door hardware, rear lights, wiper blades, gas door, and antenna.
4.sand truck with 220 sand paper, and then wet sand with 400
5.wash truck, and take leaf blower to blow water out of all the cracks
6.i let my truck sit over night in the shop to make sure all was dry
7. go over truck with rag soaked in oms. fold the rag so you can keep flipping it to have a clean side when one side gets dirty. if you go over it with glass cleaner then oms that would be better.
8.tack rag the whole truck
9. wet the floor to keep dust down
10.pour up the paint and get your 6" high density foam roller and i used a 3" foam brush

11.load up the roller. i started on top of the cab to get a feel for it. roll the paint on in 2 different directions just like painting a wall. after a few minutes go over the paint with the foam roller dipped in the paint. i put enough paint on to help the brush glide over the surface with just a little drag on it to smooth out the bubbles. keep the roller loaded up. look for runs now!
12. i put a lot of paint on the brush and stuck it between the cab and the body(4runner) to get the top of the rear quarter panels. this area is run prone so keep an eye out as you are painting the rest of the quarter panel. a little oms and a rag will get the paint off the trim.
13. i did the doors then the hood then the fenders, tailgate last.
14. front fenders, look for runs around all the transitions.
15. let the paint dry over night
16.look for light spots in the paint before you start painting.
17.wet the floor
18.tack rag the truck

19.roll on the paint looking for light spots, if the second coat with the roller does not cover it, dip the brush in the paint and go over the light spot, if that does not do it, wait till the paint tacks up a little then hit it with the brush again.
20.this paint levels out very well. make sure you knock down any bubbles before the paint starts tacking up. even little bubbles will dry like the worst case of orange peel, so knock them down a couple of minutes after you roll the paint on and look for runs.
21. lighting. use the brightest light you can get, it will help show the runs and the light spots.
that is it, a simple how to, for a simple paint job.
