4x4 Not working.

4x4 Not working.

Hi everyone, im new to the website so i hope im posting this in the right spot. I recently bought a 1988 toyota sr5 4cyl. 4x4 with 87,000 on it. At first the handle wouldn't go into h4 but by pulling it back and forth we got it there and also into l4 but they dont lock in. The 4x4 light comes on the dash and the hubs are locked in, at least one we know for sure. The other, when spinning doesn't feel like its doing much and theres no distinctive click when it hits that lock arrow. My dad thinks that it might be something to do with the transfer case and im hoping its not cause I dont have the money for serious repairs. Any thoughts?, replace the locking hubs, check inside the handle to see if its worn out? Any answers would be great

Sounds like a hub issue. So, you've got manual hubs right? Well, if you get the lever into 4hi and then thru nuetral and into 4lo in a "J" motion then the transfer is probably working. What I would do for a quick easy, quick hold my latte, trick. Lock in your hubs, first gear and 4lo. Now, slow let out the clutch and let the truck idle itself in a straight line. It should be going NICE and slow and when you give it gas your RPMs shoot up and you go a lot of no where fast. Next(now have a nice open parking lot to do this), turn the steering wheel all the way to one side, don't matter left or right. Now what should happen next is either nothing and you go in a circle OR the truck starts bucking around-that's good NOW STOP. Drive straight.

OR-jack the front end up. Lock hubs. Spin one tire at a time and look for the front drive shaft to spin. If the drive shaft doesn't spin, the hub is isn't locking in.

uhh..ya what bigbluepile said..lol..orrr...you could just lock your hubs and grab ahold of the CV shaft and try to spin it...with the truck in 4wd...if you can spin one of the cv shafts..then the hub on that side needs to be rebuilt...lol..thats how i figured out mine needed to be rebuilt..

haha yea tomorrow its late here. also i forgot to say that the truck is an auto if that makes any difference.

auto dont make any difference...but D@$# i feel sorry for you..hahaha..autos suck ballz..i drove a 3vze auto 4x4 once..it was WAY SLOW..and it was sittin on 29's!
