4x4 5 speed question

ok whats the proper prcedure for driving in 2x4? do i shift the 4x4 lever into n then drive or 2wh? does the shifter need to be in neutral to shift into 4wdh? why does the 5 speed chirp the front tires like crazy while in 4wd and not the automatic? its like you cant drive at all on pavement with the 4x4 engaged. it pulls right and left and loud chirping and barking from the tires. but when i test drove the auto i could switch into 4wd and drive on pavement with minimal resistance. benefits of the auto vs the 5speed. i personally like the 5 speed cause i like playing with stuff i like the control.

It is a part time 4WD system and that means just that, part time, like not used on pavement or other high traction surface. Shifting between 2H and 4H can be done at most anytime, any gear, no need to use the clutch (that is assuming you have locked front hubs or the ADD front axle). Just pull back for 4H, push forward for 2H. 4L requires stopping or you can often double clutch to shift into and out of low range on the fly (it is non synchro-mesh).

If you want to get into off-roading, you might hook up with the Pacific Mountain Cruisers, they meet up in the north bay:

well i only did it to test the 4x4. i know enough not to drive with it on on the pavement. cool i thought you had to put the runner in n to shift to 4h. nice! now if i have the hubs locked and the 4wd in n will it be ok? or do i have to shift into 2h? i know you guys are reading this and saying omg what a moron! i just dont want to mess it up.

You can shift into any gear or 2H-4H-N-4L range you want at lost any time. Hubs locked with 4WD in N will be almost the same as tranny in N, you won't go anywhere and you won't hurt anything.
