4WD Shifting Problem

I have a 1990 v6 pickup. I had just replaced the clutch about 50 miles ago. Prior to replacing my clutch, my 4wd was able to engage from H2 to H4 with no problems at any speed below 50mph like its supposed to. After putting everything back together, I tried shifting into 4wd and all it does is grind. It is impossible to put it in 4wd unless I am at a COMPLETE stop. I am pretty curious as to what it is. I know that there is a type of spring that is part of the transfer case's shifter and am wondering if I put the shifter in wrong.
Has anybody had this same problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks in advance!!

Do you have manual hubs?

If so, are the hubs unlocked?

If not, you put the shifter in wrong. Take it out, flip it 180, and install it correctly. Sounds to me like you made a common mistake, and the case is trying to shift into 4Lo instead of 4Hi first.

Yes the hubs are unlocked. But I noticed that the case and the shifters base both have the same shape so I'm pretty sure I put the shifter in correctly. And when I do stop completely and am able to get it into 4wd, the gears are in perfect sequence (Hi is "Down" and 4Lo is "down-right-up"). If the spring that is underneath the shifter moved before the shifter was bolted down, could that cause the same problem that I am experiencing now?

If the hubs are unlocked, you cannot shift into 4x4 unless you are sitting still.

Lock the hubs, and then try shifting into 4WD
