Seriously, maybe a hidden kill switch? I read about those over on Pirate all the time. The bottom line is to use a few layers of defense, make it hard for thieves to steal.
Oh, and a mean Pit Bull wouldn't hurt either.

Was thinking about this very question the other day, as I have a "new" 4Runner that is pretty enough to worry about if left at a few places I'm likely to leave it.

I was thinking the under-the-hood fuse box might be a quick additional layer of protection. Maybe the EFI fuse, but I'm sure someone here would point us to the best choice..

Don't blame you about worrying about your vehicle at college. Only vehicle I've ever had stolen (1962 Vespa in 1962) was stolen at a night class at University of New Mexico, while in the US Air Force.

A hidden kill switch is very effective. Most people run a toggle or button inline with their fuel pump power wire. There are many places to hide one, some people do along the door sill under the carpet, some under the dash (more obvious) and some just wire an OEM button (say for lights or wipers etc) into a blank and make it so you have to rpess that to start the vehicle...

A well hidden switch and a silent alarm with remote pager. That can be good and that can be bad.......bad if there's more than one of them.

I'd be carrying my gun anyways so don't matter how many I got multiple mags. Just to scare them with I mean.

Grant removable steering wheel w/ a column lock. Hard to steal a rig you can't steer at all.

Car alarm.

Simple kill switch...
