Question Transmission Shut Down

I have a '94 4Runner, 3.0/auto. All was ok until I just changed the power steering belt and battery. Started it up and the tranny just slips as if in neutral - does nothing in any gear. I am completely confused here. I cannot imaging the tranny going south all of a sudden. Fluid is good and proper level. Is there any electronics to check that may shut down the tranny? Truck runs great otherwise.

TIA,
Jerry

Are you getting any codes from the O/D Off Light on the dash? Press the O/D switch on the shifter and turn the O/D ON. That makes the dash light go out. Then jumper the Te1 and E1 pins in the diagnostic port ( just like if you were gonna read the CEL codes from the Check Engine Light). The auto tranny has a flash sequence similar to the engine code sequence. The O/D Off light will flash with a code, if it has one stored. Otherwise, it will just flash at a constant rate (no pauses). You may get some info there. Post what you find there, if anything.

The OD light is not flashing. The light does operate correctly. No error codes stored.

Did you check to see if the mechanical linkage from the shifter to the tranny is still intact and properly adjusted? My shifter has a little 'play' in it. I've been 'making sure' it is in 'D' for so long , now, when I shift out of Park / Reverse, that I do it subconsciously. If the linkage has somehow come apart, the shifter will move, but won't actually engage the tranny.

If I put my tranny in Drive and it's actually sort of 'hung' between detents (compared to the P-R-N-D-2-L on the shifter housing), I can drive down the road, but tranny never shifts out of 2 and the engine just continues to wind up.

Here's a link to the troubleshooting page for the A340H:
