I don't know if it is the same in the 3rd gens ans it is in the second.

I know that in the 3rd gens you can go anywhere up to 50mph and still engage the 4wheel drive.

And yes i do believe you have to be at a complete stop and you also have to be in Neutral to engage into 4Lo.

But again this is coming from a 3rd gen owner...

read your owners manual. It will instruct you on some good info about the functionality of the 4wd that you need to know

quoted from my 1992 owners manual..
" d) shifting procedure: 3vze engined vehicles with automatic transmission

shifting between h2 and h4: move the front drive control lever with the lock release button depressed.
the indicator light may not come on even if you shift into h4. if the vehicle is stopped, starting out the vehicle will turn it on. if the vehicle is moving, depress or release the accelerator pedal slightly.

***caution*** never move the front drive control lever if the wheels are slipping. stop the slipping or spinning before shifting.

to shift from h4 to h2:, simply move the front drive control lever with the lock release button depressed. the vehicle may be moving at any speed...

shifting between h4 and l4. reduce your speed to less than 18mph(30 km/h) and move the front drive control lever with the lock release button depressed.

to move from l4 to h4, simply move the front drive control lever. the vehicle may be moving at any speed."

side note... as i re-read this it seems as though there is no maximum speed(or any speed at all) listed for shifting from h2 to h4 for the 3vze. if the 22re trans is the same(which i doubt) then you have to "reduce your speed to less than 50 mph" to shift from h2 to h4.
taken from the page before the 3vze data...

i hope this all helps. i wrote exactly what was in the owners manual...

how's the snow in bayshore? i had to drive from huntington to mineola, and the northern state was a mess.. no problems in the 4runner tho..

i was shifting from 2h to 4h seamlessly while driving at around 30 or so.. i wasn't spinning the wheels tho.. i was just kinda easy on the throttle, or coasting.

I tried it on my 88 22re and it grinded from 2wd to 4wd at about 20 so I stop. form 4wd to 2wd I have done it at 20-30 and it's fine. I always stop to go into 4lo. Do you guys sometimes have to be moving transfer case, moving it just pops right out.

I have a 22re auto 89 truck. I have never had a problem shifting into 4H at 60mph or at any speed. I always let off the gas before hand. No problem shifting into 4L while moving, I have tried up to 15mph, and shift from 4L to 4H to 2H the speed makes no difference. When it snows, I lock the hubs and shift back and forth from 2 to 4 all day going from plowed streets to snow covered and never think about it.
This may not apply to the older transfer case of the pre 89 truck- pre 90 4runner.

This is from the manual for my '95...

I scanned it the last time this discussion was going on.

edit. I still had the manual handy so I scanned in the 3vz-e part...

This is from the 1995 truck owners manual.

Me too, with the stupid automatic tranny, I constantly have to shift between 4H and 2H to keep any type of speed. Although I haven't regeared yet, so I don't reach quite those speeds in the sand.

be sure to have your hubs locked if you have manual hubs if you are shifting on the move or you will have some serious problems as the cv splines wont be moving the same speed as the diff..
