i've always engaged 4lo going a few mph. but i never do it above 4 or 5. i don't even want to try it. between 2hi and 4hi, i do it at 50-60mph no problems

what tire pressure do you run? I had major power problems when I used to run at full pressure, now I drop down to 8psi and man, going uphill on a dune is no different to the engine than going up the same incline on a paved road

I usually run at least that low, I think the main thing is that I haven't regeared to 5.29's yet. I usually shift to 4hi when I start to lose traction going up a dune. It doesn't help that I have a tranny temp gauge, I drive much more conservatively now.

The sticker on my glove box is consistant with the information here. It says no more than 50 MPH between 2 high and 4 high and 5 MPH between 4hi and 4 low. I usually stop for 4L, but I have occasionally double-clutched out of it a few times going faster that 5 MPH. I do not do that often because I am not perfect and it usually grinds a little.

***caution*** never move the front drive control lever if the wheels are slipping. stop the slipping or spinning before shifting.

to shift from h4 to h2:, simply move the front drive control lever with the lock release button depressed. the vehicle may be moving at any speed...

shifting between h4 and l4. reduce your speed to less than 18mph(30 km/h) and move the front drive control lever with the lock release button depressed.

to move from l4 to h4, simply move the front drive control lever. the vehicle may be moving at any speed."

side note... as i re-read this it seems as though there is no maximum speed(or any speed at all) listed for shifting from h2 to h4 for the 3vze. if the 22re trans is the same(which i doubt) then you have to "reduce your speed to less than 50 mph" to shift from h2 to h4.
taken from the page before the 3vze data...

i hope this all helps. i wrote exactly what was in the owners manual...
awesome post. When I wheel I frequently keep it in 2wd low and use my brakes. I only stick it in 4 if I know I need it. Occasionally in mud I shift from 4lo to 4hi to get more spin. I always wondered if shifting from 4lo to 4hi and 4hi to 4lo while moving was going to beat up my xfer case much..
