4.88's!

Well last night I went and pulled a entire diff. assembly out of a 94' 4runner with stock 4.88's. I also got the entire front assembly from hub to hub. I have never seen a cleaner vehicle in my life. Only 150.000 miles on it garage kept and never offroad. the gears looked bran new! they still have allthe factory markings on them. I am so excited and I am puting them in today. I will post pictures later. These should be a very nice change to the 4.10 I run now. P.S. both only cost me 500 dollars

I wish I could find some 4.88s out of a runner for that much around my area or on some message boards somewhere. I have been looking for some gears or maybe even a locker too.

What size tires are you running? are you driving a truck or 4runner?

woah, 800??? I picked up a set of 4.88's for my truck and my dad's 4runner for just $200 a set. Those yards that want $800 just suck!

Bear80 ~ How quickly could you find me some 4.56''s or 4.88's? Is that just for the gears or the carriers too? I don't think I couuld pass up $200.

Gotta pay for quality. sure $200 is cheap, but how many miles? Warranty? etc etc. Thats all.

7-10yrs ago parts for the truck/4runners up to '95 around here were kinda pricey but now most stuff is dirt cheap cause no one's looking for it anymore. A guy that owns a small volume toyota/import yard fixes me up with great prices since I see he about every other weekend.

He use to get tons of those early/mid toyota's but lately not so much. It could be a while till another 4.56 or 4.88 truck shows up. As for warrenty, why would you need one for a 3rd??? A simple look over the gears and bearings is all you need. Carrier bearings rearly go bad and either way you should put in a new spacer to set pinion bearing preload and you should increase the carrier bearing preload on used gears. Front's don't see much use and mileage isn't always a true judgment of the condition. I just don't get the drive for warrenties, such a gluteness american tradtion, just make sure of what you'r buying and for $200 it's not worth the time. --Acutally I could see the worries if you buy stuff from a yard that makes you take what they have and you can't choose or see what they came from.

I'm still thinking about putting the 4.88s in the truck. I'm running 33x10.50s with 4.10s right now. I could feel a difference when I put the 33s on but it's not anything that I can't live with but I would love to have more power. I'm only worried about losing more gasmileage due to the higher RPMs with the 4.88s.

Well got the whole front assembly put on! the rear is still on blocks. The wheel barrings on the drivers side were shot. I bought all new seals and barrings. I took them to a machine shop near where I was doing the work and the guys said they would have then done by closing.... well 830 rolled around and eveyone split. So I looked up the guys home phone no. to ask what the f@@cking deal was. He took them 40 minutes away to get pressed out. Ends up he took them to the same town where I live! Idiot... so after some choice words we were somehow disconnected. I'm going to the other machine shop myself this morning to pick them up and install. All I have left is to bolt the axels and attach the brake lines and give those 4.88's hell!

I'm down with some 4.88s also. I'd be happy with some 4.56's for that matter. I'm tired of no 5th. Does adding the 4.88s from 4.10s running 33x10.50s improve gas mileage as well as performance?

Yes. You should actually have more power than stock 4.10s and 26s or whatever that stock size is.
