However it may not give you quite the same pep as the 4.10s with the 225s because you are spinning a heavier tire. But... 4.88s would end up gearing you a bit low I think, when your speedo says 65, you would only really be traveling 60.6. To achieve the same actual speed, with the 4.88s and 31s, you would have to rev your vehicle about 7 percent higher... so you may see a slight dip in fuel economy, but that would depend on the type of driving you do, and the rpm @ which your engine gets its peak fuel economy... Hope that makes sense
THANK YOU!!! That's the stuff I've been looking for! I like the fact that I can get the speedo back to normal, but am also looking to gain as much power/accerleration as possible. Would you recommend the 4.56's or the 4.88's for better overall quickness and higher top end highway speeds? Thanks again for your help!

In the end, it's entirely up to you... In my opinion; if you do lots of highway driving, go for the 4.56, if you do more in town & off road, or if you plan on running larger tires in the not too distant future go for the 4.88s

Here's my say:
Stock was the 28.5" tire and 4.10 gears, 22re, 5 speed, 4wd, xtra cab pickup.
I put 31" mud tires on heavy steel rims with the 4.10's. It was a dog. Drop in gas mileage (city driving) and hard to get up hills. Speedo was reading 7 km/h too slow.
I tossed the 4.56 gears in (still with the 31" mud tires). Speedo was 6 km/h too fast. Great gas mileage in the city (20-22 mpg). I could climb hills no problem, much less down shifting. Engine was definitely revving higher on the highway. It was into the 3k RPM all the time. Very zippy compared to stock.

Current setup:
4.56's 33 x 12.5 BFG A/T on rock crawler steel rims (combo is almost the same weight as the 31" mud tire/wheel combo). Speedo is pretty much bang on accurate. Hills are roughly the same ability as stock. I'm liking this combo because the engine isn't revving as high on the highway. I haven't really tested this setup thoroughly yet, I'm still on my first tank of gas on this combo. I can't comment on gas mileage yet because I recently switched oil weigh which is reeking havoc on my gas mileage (don't ask).

Thanks! Sounds like the best bet would be 4.56's for my set-up then. When you put your 4.88's on please post your thoughts.

thanks for that stuwy! yeah i'm gonna run 31's with 4.10's and see how it goes. but if i do swap them now from this i know that i would want the 4.56's in it probably.
thanks

I feel its better to be over geared then under geared.. Until you have experienced what gearing can do, you don't really get it.

Amen brotha,
I was hoping to help these guys make an educated decision based on my trial and error.
