4.88 third

hey. just wondering about swapping to 4.88's in my 4runner. I have a 4cyl 4runner 92' and its got 4.10's in it right now. i've heard that 4.88's come stock in v6's with the 31" tire package. so is it possible if i find one of those that i can put it in my 4runner? just wondering about if that's compitable with my 4runner. so yeah if i could get some thoughts on that it'd be great!
thanks

the 4runner donor has to be auto trans and 92-95 as well i think. look for code g144, if i recall. the swap is straight forward. search here for '4.88'.

so does the donor have to be auto even if mine is a 5sp manual? also mine is g292. so it's 2 pinion. is the g144 the 4 pinion one? will that work still?

I spent almost a year at PnP looking for a set out here. I finally found 'em.
This will be second gear swap this year.
4.10's to 4.56's in early summer.
4.56's to 4.88 some time soon.

Check the door jams, not the gear.

From what i have learned in these forums this is how it goes:

31"=4:56
33"=4:88
35"=5:29

If you plan on going to 33" tire later on you should go with the 4:88s
It should work just fine with 31" you will just experience higher rpms and quicker acceleration.
I read a forum here the other the day of someone using 4:88 gears on 31" tires.

SOMEONE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG

go for the 4.88s if you plan on running 33s, I'm currently running 4.56 behind a 3.4 and a 5 speed, and wish I had slightly lower gears. If you're still looking for 4.56s by the time I throw in my 4.88s, you can have mine for a case of beer + the shipping.

ok. yeah i'll probably try and find some 4.88's for it then. because i'm gonna run at least 32's, so i'd rather have that if i can find it.
thanks for the responses.
shipping would probably be a killer on those anyways! haha.

factory 4.88 gears are found on 92-95 pickups and 4runners with a 3vze, automatic and the 31" tire package from the factory.

I got mine out of a 92 "sequoia edition" 4runner.
