4:88 gears and 31" Tires?

Just wondering if anyone is running 31" tires and 4:88's? I am running 30" tires right now and 4:88's and it is screaming down the freeway at 55mph (Around 3K RPM). If I were to go with 31" tires would it make that big of a difference and correct the speedometer? right now the Speedometer is about 5-7 mph off. Thanks in advance.

many 2nd gen 4Runners came with with 31" tires and 4.88 gears. However they were autos, so your standard trans may still throw the speedo off with that gearing.

3k is screaming? i had 31s with 4.10s and it was slow but tolerable. i just went up to 33s and now it won't get out of its own way. i have to leave it in one gear lower everywhere i go, so it will stay above 3k and have any kind of power. i rarely rev over 4k.

i'd think you'll be happy with 31s on your next purchase. or send me them 4.88s i need em!

I'd go bigger than 31s, remember to get back to factory gearing you need to run 33 and 4.88

Lol TJ I had 4:10 gearing but decided to do the gears before the tires. The 4:88's are nice I love them but they are geared really high for 30" tires. Thats why I was wondering if the 31"s would make a difference so the motor wouldn't have to rev so high just going 55mph My gas mileage really went in the crapper since the swap but it sure is nice taking hills in 5th gear and only half way down on the throttle.

on your 93 they should fit. my gas mileage is in the crapper cuz i have to floor it in 4th to maintain 55mph. i never use 5th anymore, unless i'm doing 65 downhill! hah

have you considered a 33x10.50 tire? The 33" diameter will put you close to stock ratio with your 4.88s

That is what I am eventually going to go to but I am on a tight budget with the wife lol. I want to go with a 33x10.50x15 BFG Mud Terrain and a 4" Suspension lift but for right now I was looking for something as a temporary solution with no lift and I have access to a set of 31" BFG A/T tires but wasnt sure if it would make that big of a difference.

Yea I feel you. The 33x10.50's are a bit harder to come by used, whereas good used deals on 31s are dime-a-dozen. Since they just came out with the KM2, BFG is discontinuing the original KM mud. I've heard some places are clearancing them out for pretty good prices.

If you're on a budget, you might want to reconsider the 4" suspension lift. You definitely don't need that much to fit the tires you want. You might be able to fit them stock. You can surely fit them with a 2" body lift, which costs less than $200. Do some searching around this site and you'll come across a lot of good info.

I ran 33x10.5 with no lift on my 90 p/u. I didnt even crank the torsions, they might have been turned a little up by PO, but i havent touch them.

i'm gonna be rocking the 31s with 4.88s in a few days because i just got my locker yesterday in the mail to put in my 4.88 diffs sitting in the garage. sticking with the 31s for now because my michelin tires have like 85% tread left and doesn't make sense to spend more money on tires until those wear a little more. right now with 4.10 gears and 31s, i'm running about 2900-3000 rpms on the hwy at 65-70 and i get a consistent 20mpg, so i figure with 4.88s it will be around 3500rpms - not too bad. gonna be really good on hills/towing/trails. 31s might take a few hundred rpms off your hwy driving compared to the 30s.

as said before, 33s will fit fine w/o any mods at all besides use of a BFH on the pinch weld. 4" lift won't do much other than make your ride taller since it does nothing to increase your travel up front - and most of them come with blocks unless you've got more $ to spend, eww.... only reason i could see for a need of a 4" suspension lift is if you want to run 35s, but then again 35s still don't really fit w/o other mods to keep them from rubbing since they are typically a wider tire and need more clearance. just get yourself some BJ spacers and longer shackles for budget lift that will actually do something beneficial.

High you will like the 4:88's they make a huge difference from 4:10. I am revving around 3K at 55-60 MPH so you are gonna be screaming at 65-70. I am gonna eventually end up with 33x10.50x15's but I am gonna have to wait a little bit. If you need any help let me know I just did my front swap about a month ago so its stilll pretty fresh in my mind.

i think it will go pretty smooth doing the swap. just picked up some star-pattern sockets to swap over my non-add shafts onto the front diff. got the lockright yesterday (which is MUCH smaller than i thought it'd be), so i'm gonna toss that in the rear 3rd in the next few days. i think the only thing that's gonna hold me up is taking off the IFS brace that was a pain to get in, so i figure it'll be a pain to take out.

i used to commute in my truck all the time to work (30miles one way), but now i just use either my SV650 or the corolla, so i'm not worried about the hwy rpms. i, too plan on some 33s eventually, but kinda want to rock the 31s to help correct some of my odometer. don't know how long 31s have been on the truck (assuming right after stock 28s wore out), so i don't know how off the odometer is compared to true mileage, so i'm hoping to at least "lessen" the difference with this combo.

High the front swap is really simple just have someone help you if you can when you drop the front diff it is really heavy for one person to try and hold. Sounds like you already have it figured out I ended up having to buy some E-sockets as well to get the axle tube off. The only thing that I would recommend for you is spray the $h!t out of the CV Axle Bolts mine were on extremely tight and I almost wasnt able to get them off of the axles. Heres a link to a site that helped me.

Not trying to hijack, but is anyone running 4.88s with 35's? Right now I'm running 4.10's with 35's and I never use 5th. I'm planning on going with 33's but I still have a lot of meat left on the 35's I plan on buying gears first and just wanted to know if you able to use 5th gear with 4.88s and 35's.
