3VZE & oversize valves

Tearing the sixer down to repair the scuffed piston and going to do a few upgrades while I'm there.

It's my belief that heat was the killer for this engine and I've got a really good ceramic shop nearby (he's doing the machining too.) The owner says he's getting very good results putting ceramic inside the engine so I'm going to ceramic coat the piston tops, combustion chamber and headers.

Doing the combustion chamber means pulling the valves. Might as well do a valve job too. Upgrading to bigger valves would be easy.

Ebay lists a full set of oversize ones for $60.

I know that oversizing valves only really helps at higher rpms, but the 3VZE is a pig below 3k anyway and this one really wakes up around 4k and pulls strong to redline. Seems to me like letting it breath a little better can only be a good thing.

Anyone have an opinion as to if oversize valves would help or not?

Balanced and blueprinted shortblock.
Ported and polished heads, intake and headers.
Custom Ground Cams

K&N FPIC air filter system with new filter (less than a year / 5kmi old.)

he says they are 1mm oversize

hey i just put in oversized valves in they are EPN but i am still in the process of putting it back together so i will let u know what happens but i hear it helps a little but a whole lot more with a new cam

I have cams and it clearly runs a lot better in the higher RPMs than a stocker does.

It's a custom crower grind. Lowlife Tim claimed they were his design, but a little digging revealed that Crower did these for a Toyota Racing team. They were not designed for Tim.

Crower will do them for anyone, you just have to send them a good set to start with.

with all those mods id SERIOUSLY consider getting the ECU rechipped to keep up...

come to think of it i cant think of any glowing success storyies myself.... so i guess that would mean i withdrawl my earlyer comment

actually instead of getting it "rechipped" you should go grab an smt-6!

He's doing the same mods as I and I really dont see any issues. Reason being if a stock 3vze computer can keep up with the turbocharged 3vze's running around it shouldnt have any issues with bolt on and internal mods. Now I could be totally wrong on that, but I guess we'll find out!

Besides the SMT-6 will allow someone with these mods to get the most out of the system!

What is an SMT-6?


Just got back from the shop were the machine & ceramic work will be done.

Going to be about $865 for labor and $350 for ceramic.

Some of the labor could be more or less once we tear it down, but that'll be close.

Rebuild kits (piston, rings, gaskets) in the area of $300 and some 'other' shoit, I'm in the $2k range. Agh.

Oh well, gotta be done I guess.

I think one of the things that killed it was heat. Huge difference in oil pressure from cold to hot. AND w/ the K&N breathing all that under the hood heat there's a huge difference in performance too, I'm talking seat of the pants noticeable. I'm going to figure out how to duct that darn K&N so it's only getting outside air - has anyone done this?

as far as the air ducting i think I have an idea, but right now im lacking time and funds...

An SMT6 is a piggyback controller that the 3rd gen guys like to use when they add a TRD charger and 7th injector kit. This piggyback allowsyou to play with the ignition timing as well as the fuel curves for our motors and can trigger other things under certain times...
