Hey.
So my next project on my 90 pickup 3vze (170k) will include fludshing my manual transmission fluid and replacing it with synthetic (royal purple) fluid. I have a few questions:

Firstly i cant find any links to picks for the job, so if you know any please share.
Secondly... Im not sure if a flush is necessary, im changing to synthetic so it may be. Also do i need to replace the gasket and screen or can i get away with just cleaning it? Im hoping to get away with just a drain and refill. Im a mechanic in training lol so step by step instructions would be great!

Also.. i believe i can use the same fluid for my transfer case???? Any links to that job would be great

 

I dont think you need to flush it to go to syn fluid. When i change mine im just gonna drain out the old stuff then fill it up with MT-90.

 

No need to flush or anything like that. Transmission flushes are a money grab.

Just remove the 24mm (all the diffs and tranny/t-case plugs are 24mm) fill plug first, then remove the drain plug.

Drain all fluid and fill till it comes out of the fill hole. Make sure you use the correct GL4 fluid. Most guys like to run redline mt90, some of the best stuff you can buy for your yota. I run all Amsoil synthetics in my drivetrain

 

x2 on the fill plug first!!! If you cant get it off then you know before all the fluid is out haha.

Any1 know the capacity for diff,transfer case and trans? I think there will be a quart or two of un-drained oil.

 

Idk about your rig but heres mine

Trans, R150f - 2.3qts
T case, 3vz - 1qt
Rear diff 8'' - 2.3qts
Front Diff - 1.9

You can fill mostly everything till it comes out the fill plug.

Its all 75-90 but you can run a heavier oil in the rear diff if its hot year round where you live.

That MT 90 stuff is like 12 a qt btw. Its what i paid yesterday.

 

Call me a lazy ass, but I've had my Redline for a year and still haven't changed the fluid. Gonna do it today finally...and when I bought it it was only about 7 bucks a quart.

 

Dumb question - how often do you guys recommend doing this?

 

When ever you feel like it? haha idk.

Im just doing mine because I havent changed it since I got it, the tranny is out cause im doing the clutch, and it cant hurt anything haha.

 

I've never done mine and I've had it for over 4 years.

Probably something I should do sooner than later.

 

Im not saying it should be done, but its not as important as the automatics are. Automatics are alot more complicated then the manuals.

But yea, its easy, 24mm wrench, 2 bolts, your basically done haha.

My transmission capacity seems different than the FSM states. Anybody else fit too much fluid in theirs? 1994 4Runner, 3vze, manual trans (R150F) and 4 wheel drive. The manual quotes oil capacity for the R150F trans as 2.3 quarts. I put almost 3 quarts in and it's not leaking out of the fill plug yet. Front diff (1.9 qt) and transfer case (1.1 qt) were right on the money. I made sure to jack the rear up so the vehicle is level (driveway has slight grade to it). I haven't gotten to the rear diff yet, I'll probably wait until it's snowing and 10 below. I drove to work today and I'll pull the trans fill plug tonight and see if anything leaks out, hmmm.

HINT: go to the dealer (NAPA, Autozone, Checker don't have them) and get the proper drain and fill plug gaskets BEFORE you start this job. They're about $1.50 each but should make a difference. Trans and Xfer case are aluminum crush washer and diffs use a steel crush washer. Of the six I've pulled off so far (make that five, front diff drain was missing a washer and leaking, surprise) all were wrong. Grease monkey has been changing the fluids the past few times, ugh. Missing washers, drain plug inserted in fill hole (drain plug is magnetic) and other stuff makes me glad I've taken the time to do it right this time. I've been religious about changing fluids every 40-50k miles and owned the truck since new. All of the fluids so far looked good, I could see through them as they drained, not black, just amber. I think the lube shops only have GL-5 lube too. I put GL-4 in the trans and it seems smoother already. GL-5 in the diff.

I've put this off for six months, who wants to fix stuff when the weather is nice and you can see until 8:00 pm in the summer time. No, I waited until winter when it's much more fun...

 

So you can use mt -90 on auto transmission too instead if regular ATF ?

 

NO, use ATF. Check the FSM for correct specs.
