My truck is missing this entire wire. What kinda symptoms are caused when this isn't connected? What exactly is this particular part called?

sry I ment to post a picture and forgot. Its the wire that connects to the peice that has the long cylindrical thing that inserts into the intake. The thing thats a pain in the rear to get off. I don't know what the part is called though.

 

You mean the piece with the square bit sticking out that drops into that curvy part, or the round piece with the hole that goes right under the hood? No wait, I bet he's talking about that greasy thing that's got them two screws loose in the head and makes a lot of noise? Be careful, that thing may get kicked out of the truck when it's moving, it'll hurt a lot but hope you can post pics.

 

Seriously, I think you are talking about the EGR valve and probably the EGR temp sensor. The wire for that comes off the harness that goes in the plastic cover across the front of the plenum and drops down behind the PS pump and battery. The wire is between the plenum and the fender.

 

yes I was talking about the egr valve, lack of knowledge can really waste a lot of time! I just started getting code 71 today. The wire is still missing on the valve don't know where the plug to the harness is, and don't even know if it exist on my truck. I guess its time to go check. What should I be doing to the old valve before replacing it? I thought my coil and igniter was bad and easily fixed that with eletrical parts cleaner. Everytime I get a code diagnosed and fixed, another pops up!

its a 95, South Carolina actually. I found the egr valve wire on the harness. Now I need a the one that goes on the EGR valve. I guess I need to go to the dealer for that. Would this disconnected wire be throwing the code 71, and would it cause any loss of performance in the truck?

 

Code 71 is an EGR malfunction code - and yes, you would probably notice some performance issues if the valve is stuck open - or doesn't open.
Edit - I don't think there are any electrical connectors on the EGR valve itself, only vacuum lines. I know there is an electrical connector on the VSV that opens and closes the valve.

 

Without photos we are shooting in the dark a bit... but there is an electrical connector for the EGR temp sensor. Not all 3vze's have that sensor, I believe that sensor showed up in '94 or '95.

Look at the lower portion of the EGR assembly as it comes up from the exhaust manifold... the connector for the wire you are talking about should be down in there somewhere.

Folks who remove their EGR components put a 10K resistor in the EGR temp sensor wire connector to fool the ECU so it stops throwing code 71. That would cure your CEL but it sounds like you also need to find out if your EGR components are working or not.

Search for EGR removal and you will find some good info and photos that may help you.

how long have you had the car before it threw the code??? if its supposed to have the sensor i wonder if a mechanic robbed it at the shop or something???

 

I've had the truck for 4 years and its always had check engine lights, I'm just now trying to diagnose them.

 

The circled object is what I assumed was the egr valve. The wire coming off of the circled part is what is missing on my truck.

 

that is the egr! are there any cut wires or anything coming out of the big black wire loom that goes in front of the engine and behind the timing belt? thats where mine ties in!

 

Is that the O2 sensor he's talking about???
