1990 4Runner, bought it around a month ago with 170k (miles) on the odometer, it hadn't been driven for 5-6 months before I bought it so I did a tune up, used a can of Mopar Combustion Chamber Cleaner on the intake, greased everything up and changed the oil immediately.

After changing the oil for the first time I noticed that it was getting dark after only 500 miles or so, then the 3VZE started ticking. Added a bit of Rislone oil treatment I had kicking around and drove it for a few more days then changed the oil again. The oil came out pitch black, screwed in a new filter and filled with 10w30 and the ticking is gone - runs as smooth as any engine I've ever owned. Planning on several more short interval oil-changes with a bit of Rislone or Marvel Mystery Oil to clean up any remaining sludge that built up while it was sitting before I bought it.

Since doing a tune-up, changing the oil a couple of times, cleaning the intake out and greasing everything up really well it runs better and better, miles ahead of how it was when I picked it up. Unsure of the head-gasket or timing belt history although with that many miles, I'm expecting some work has been done at one point or another.

just put this in another "how many miles" thread the other day....

On my 94.... Just over 260k, runs strong, no engine probs at all since I bought it... and never had the hg recall.... shes waiting on me to put new ball joints in her now, so I can take her to yota for the steering rod relay recall.
I paid $600 for this rig, 2 years ago, with 200k on it BTW.

My 93.... Well, not exactly sure.... The odometer says 268k, however, I have known that is off for a few years. I drove the thing for over a year with a bad speed sensor, so for one year(approx 30k miles) It didnt register any miles, then I fixed that, and blew my rear diff last winter.. she had 4.88's, and I couldnt find a decent replacement, so I used a 4.10 that I had on the shelf in my shop, and ran 31's... the speedo registered aqbout 16k miles in that year( I drove the 94 a lot more) and I'm figuring it was off by about 20% (so about another 2500 miles), then the other day...I noticed the odometer is only working intermitently... speed is fine, but odo works when it want... I have no idea how long this has been going on, as I dont really drive it that much anymore, the wife has been having her way with it, but it has said 268k for about 2-3 mos now, and I know she drives at least 2k mo, and that dosent include the times I used it to tow my trailer... so I'm gonna guess she's got somewhere around 310k miles.... prolly more. This one had the hg recall done by toyota around 70k miles.

273k. Just replaced the head gasket since it started to get the symptoms but I stopped driving it right when I found out. Still runs strong though

Got about 262,400 miles on my 88 3vze! Only major work has been timing belts. It does need some work like on a few oil leaks, but, overall they are underated, excelent engines!

213,000 on my 1990 Pickup. Timing belt and regular maintenance is all it has required from me for the 1,000 miles I have had it. So far I love it. I agree with 88 runner that they are underrated.

150k+ on my daughter's 1991 ex-cab 3VZE. No idea if the HGs were ever done before we got it. I'm hoping they either have been or won't need to be, I really don't want to dig that far into the motor any time soon.

I sold mine at 217k, it had had the HG recall done, and two timing belts -- was dead reliable for me though.
