3vz-e help

ay guys,
well i need some help with my 3vz-e, i just changed the oil yesterday and fixed my vaccum leak and also adjusted my idle screw since the idle was at 600rmp in park. At low rpms i hear alot of pinging and a small knock and when i go into higher rpms the knock goes awaybut not the pinging. The knock goes the same speed as the motor so i know its not a rod knock. i hope its not a valve. im gonna check the timing today to see if its out of timing.

Also when i do set the timing and when i jump the dia. box it seems like i have no advance timing and on the ODO the CEL flashes and O/D flashes.

also ive been adjusting my idle alot since its idling low and everytime i do it, the motor will stay at about 800rpm for about a week then go back down to 600rpms.

I need your guys help!!!!

when you jump the diagnostic terminal does the CEL just flash steady? or does it flash a code?

Sounds alot like the TPS, as cliche as that may seem. Lack of base timing is a clue there. And when's the last time you've had the valves adjusted? Any valve related symptoms may be just from poor timing, but if it's not been done in a while you may ought to.

BTW, the steady CEL flashing (means the ECM is not detecting problems) and o/d light is normal.

Shoes, I wish I was there so I could listen to it,

The pinging could be caused by a problem with the EGR. I'd say to check that.

But you really need to focus on the knocking noise.

I'd listen very closely for the source. Use a mechanics stethoscope if you can. If not hold a steel rod to your ear and move it around to different places on the engine to see if you can isolate the noise. I could be from the rods, mains or cams. but is also could be from the timing belt, idler pulleys or waterpump. Really anything that would cause a knocking noise could be a bigger problem brewing.

If you know a good mechanic see if they will listen to it and give you some quick advice on how to proceed.

i could take a video of her running, but i honestly think its coming from one of the cams, cuz if it was a rod then wouldnt it go half the engine speed?????
and the sound is coming from the top of the motor.

Pull off the plug wires one at a time; if the knock stops when any one of the wires is pulled, you've found your problem cylinder. If that doesn't reveal the problem, I'm not sure where to point you next...

Good luck.

It's unlikely that you would be able to tell the difference of speed of a rod knock. it'll speed up just like the rpm.

Usually a rod knock will change in intensity with engine load.

I've seen several 3VZEs that had a knocking noise from the center idler pulley for the T-belt. also from the cool fan bearing. some of them will also get a knocking noise from the distributor.

You're chasing a vacuum leak...

make sure the crank pulley bolt is tight. it could be loose causing the noise and as the keyway wears the timing is retarding more and more.

Of course your noise and idle issue may be unrelated. TN Rabbit could be right about a vacuum leak.
