35" tire - 4.88 on 3.0V6 AT?

I just found a great deal on 35" BFG All Terrain (95% trad left).

5.29 or 5.71 for AT seems to be the ideal gear for 35" tires on 3.0 V6.
Does anybody run 35" with 4.88s?

Please let me hear your experience.
I have 33" Super swamper TSL for muddy trail so this will be for on road and sand.

Thanks

5.71's... 'cause 5.29's won't even be close. To put things in perspective, the 4.88 factory geared 4runner came with 31's.

I just regeared to 5.71's for 33's and wouldn't even use 5.29's for this tire size.

I ran factory 4.88's with 33's until last weekend and well, it sucked. I'll just be honest, the auto has no tolerance for over gearing. In fact, undergearing really improves the drive characteristics of the truck.

In sand you'll need that lower gearing all the more.

One downside if you have factory 4.88's is that you'll need to get another rear third member. The factory 4.88 rear third is an odd ball and no other ratio gear set is available. That's not a big deal of course, 4.10 thirds can be bought cheap all day, just wanted to let you know in case you weren't aware.

Nice truck btw, same color as mine.

all of your reply is expected.
Just wanted hear maybe "not so bad!!", but reality is what it is. LOL

I have to agree 33" TSLs are heavy tires and AT with 4.88s is not so great.
Just got 2" BL and I found a set of 4 35" BFG KOs with 95% of tread left for $300!!

I guess I have to pass on that.

BTW I found out about factory 4.88 is not easy to re-gear about 6mo. ago so I am keeping as is. thought about swap to 3.4 V6 and 5speed, but no budget....I guess I am keeping as is.

Well, if you did have the 3.4, I'm betting you could run the 33's no sweat with the 4.88s.

Regearing is not cheap though. I bit bullet and had it done along with a Truetrac in the rear diff.

4.88 + 35" + AT = no overdrive

EVER

Well, if you're lucky, since the torque converter will NEVER lock up, you stand a good chance that you'll smoke the tranny if you don't install an aux tranny cooler.

Even 35's with 5.71 is pushing it IMHO. Molly's truck is a DOG set up that way. Both she and I agree that having to work the truck so hard probably led to the demise of the headgasket...

you could always buy the tires and hold onto them for a while while you save the money to regear. $300 for a set of 35"s witn 95% is a pretty good deal.

If you want to, I can pass you a information.
He is in Ohio and 35" BFG KOs, also 33" mud tires with 35 to 50% tread left.

here is the his ad.
he is asking $400 for 35" but he agrees to sell me at $300.
Just say "I heard from mcdoggy2000"

http://www.offroadohio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=5085

My loss, but I realize 35" KOs are not what I need for what I do.
