actually traction is a function of weight and surface area......

with a more spread out ie wider tire you maybe able to float more but it can reduce your traction since the tire does not create as much friction with the ground. Really this is dependent on a number of variables and you are both right.........

IMHO a 10.50 is plenty wide for a yota

i'll be the first to say...that i've gone EVERYWHERE my friends have with their full size pickups and 12.50 wide tires...in my '86 with 10.50wide tires..and even been places they haven't.

but it woulda been BETTER to have 12.50's.

we still don't know if this guy has an Auto or a 5Speed.

and i say go with 5.29's regardless!

because soon enough, you'll want 35's lol

back on gears i have a 22r stock gears and 36" tsl and an aussie in the rear daily driver. it is a little slow on the road but it pulls way better than my buddys jeep same gears ratio and 33". but jeeps are junk anyway haha

correct. though i have found 10.50's to be a burden in multiple situations. my 13.50's are much more capable than my 10.50's were on "most" surfaces.

Probably put a locker in the rear end to get me some positive traction...What yall think?
I just put 285/70R17 GY MT-R's (about 33" x 11.5" tires) on my '87 4Runner with 4.88 gears going from how I bought it with 31x10.50 and 4.10 gears. It is very well matched now as said above and prior threads. 70mph is about 3000 rpm and its no problem to hold, but of course needs downshifting going up hills. This is not my daily driver, but this gearing setup is very streetable. You must have to smoke the clutch to get rolling with 33's and 4.10 gears

I drive it enough and will take it on long road trips that the 33" / 5.29 combo would be too much gear for highway speeds. My compromise after wheeling this weekend (and wanting more gear reduction off-road) is that I ordered a 4.7 transfer case gear set to help off-road, but keep the streetability.

Mine took a 1" body lift to get proper clearance for the 33's though.

I also added a Detroit locker at the same time as the 4.88's in the rear and it makes a huge diffrence off-road.

I don't plan on running 35's so I'm good with 4.88, but you should consider what you want to do. If its more that 50-50 that you'll add 35's at a later date, then go with 5.29's.

I have a 4 inch suspension lift and im afraid that the extended driveshaft is going to snap lol
What yall think?

My buddy had a 2.4 pickup and had super swampers tsl 33's on it. Had torque cams and headers done to the truck. And a lift of course. Looked great but was breaking axles left and right b/c he was always dumping the clutch to get the truck sideways. LOL Those were the days!!!!!
But yeah they will work for normal driving conditions!!!

not like it matters but i went from the stock tires to 31 10.5 to 33.12.5 still rolling on the stock 4.56 gears and auto with a 2.4L 22re with the 33's i seem to go places and grip better then i did with the high traction studded 235/75 i had when i got the truck. and i have no issues doing 70 on the highway ( although i dont like to run that fast in the yota)

Well i decided to put 5.29's in, along with a new 5 speed manual transmission,
Possibly going to get some 35's in the near future. But we'll see haha
But as for 5.29's and 33 inch tires, What is my gas mileage and speed gonna do?

you should still get 18 to 19 mpg, and your speedometer will be off about 5% faster than actual. I put 5.29s, Aussie locker and 33x10.50 and everything is great. Its my DD and I have no problem doing 70 to 75. Oh yeah and the 10.50's will still stuff in the rear no need to cut anything.

I won't comment on any tires, because the widest I've run is 10.5", however this is an interesting read:
