3.0 wont run @ *10 BTDC

I just picked up a sweet little 90 3.0L 4 runner. It runs but is really rich. so today i put a timing gun on it and with the diagnostic port shorted at full operating tempature it wants to run at like *50 BTDC! (this is just a guesstimate). When you set it back to *10 it has no power and slow throttle response. Does this sound like my timing belt could have slipped somewhere? The only code I have is a code 51.

I say put it back to where it was if it at least ran before. Possible your belt is also off a tooth.

Did the engine change speed when you jump the test leads? If not, the TPS is bad so when they based the timing on bad TPS, you won't get the real timing number.

Are you sure your distributor is in correctly? S/B @ 11 o'clock position with #1 cylinder @ TDC.

50 ?? The slot in the side of the distributor on my '91 was with the lock-down bolt centered at around 8 BTC. I advanced to 12 BTC so now the bolt is nearing the edge of the slot. about 20 BTC is all I could physicall get, so something is way off or you're using the wrong cylinder. #1 is on your left hand on that if I remember right...

Good luck, wish timing was MY only problem (hg leaks...)

50 was just a guess. its way to the left of the timng marks. It doesnt change anything when i short the diagnostic terminals so its sounding like that dang tps. i just havent messed with a ohm meter before so im trying ot figure out how to test it.

If someone can chime in what's the timing should be without the termination that would help.
When my TPS was bad, I had to smog it so I just retard the timing for the smong and brought it back afterwards....I just don't remember the timing number.

I'd check for DTC first though.
