I was just about to rebuild my 3.0 and again now I dont know if I should rebuld it with good head gasket and maybe throw some headers to prevent bad gasket in future or should i find a 3.4. I wonder how much a ref for smog cost. dam the confusion!!! This forum has so much knowledge it almost makes my choice harder... ha oh by the way I got my 3' ext and air compressor will be here tomorrow to run my impact. And my sawmill where I work just laid everyone off for next week and possible longer.. so that gives me the time to do this job.... but which way to turn clyde... oh and there is more confusion I have a Auto tranny... am i GONNA GET LITTLE or no power with an auto... if so I would love a 5 speed

The inspection by the ref is only $30 plus $8.25 for the smog certificate when you pass, and it's no charge when you don't pass. You can go back as many times as you want. The ref only charged me for the smog certificate when I finally passed.

engine rebuild
i was looking to do an engine rebuild on my 92 4runner..(we bought a camera that goes in thru the spark plugs and the pistons look shot..i think it was cuz one if not two of the valve cover spacers fell inside while replacing the gaskets..yea it was stoopid..and no i didnt do it..) people have been telling me to just buy a remanufactured one but those are like 2600$ plus 1500$ labor for the removal and install..i dont have that kind of money..i was wanting to just buy the rebuild kit on credit and pay whoever does it cash since im broke as hell right now..can anyone tell me what i may be lookin at also if its a good idea to do and if theres anyone in the modesto, ca area that can hook me up with a good lagit job/price...

I have a 94 Ext cab that I recently dropped a 3.4 in after I blew yet another HG in my 3.0.... The difference between the two is night and day. No more flooring it just to hit the slow lane on the freeway or finding a way around the hill for beach access. If you paying someone to do the work and money is any issue stick with the 3.0 it is a good motor if cared for, if you are doing the work yourself or money truly isn't an issue I would say go for it! I guarantee you won't regret it...

3.0 liter
I have a 3.0 liter, moving to the 3.4 soon, the 3.0 are great engines, super reliable, but not as powerful, fuel efficent, or strong (hp-wise)
I like the 3.0, but the 3 4 is def the superior choice

I am probably the only supporter of the 3.0 on this forum.
For me, it makes an excellent trail motor because it is just torquey enough to
get the job done, but not powerful enough to be constantly spinning tires.
I have 208,xxx miles on mine, and it runs very good, especially for the abuse it takes.
Don't gt me wrong, the 3.4 is nice. I've driven many 3.4 powered trucks, and to me, it just doesn't have that "night and day" feeling to make me want to put that much extra money/effort into a swap.

Yeah, all things being equal. Probably fine. Esp if you're short of cash-type-stuff. Who isnt?

I have several experiences with both engines and can see pros and cos to each one. I have had 1 1990 4runner and 1 1994 4runner with the 3.0. Both had no power and auto transmissions but we used them as woods and hunting vehicles and they were great for that. They both had oil pressure issues in the end that killed them and then I started parting them out because neither were good enough to sink money into. I have a 2000 4runner with the 5 speed manual and the 3.4 and I love it. We use it in the woods, driving on the interstate and it still goes down the road at 70 mph with larger tires, a lift, and heavy bumpers. It is significantly more peppy than the 3.0's that I have owned and they are actually worth investing money into. So in short- Small repair on the 3.0= fix it and large repair on the 3.0= swap it.
