New to this site & have a question.


I just wanted to get some oil pressure info. If anyone has the SR5 dash I would like to know where the oil pressure needle reads when the engine is completely warmed up & at idle & at 2500 rpms. Example: 1/4, 1/3. 1/2, etc.

Also if anyone has an aftermarket oil pressure gauge on the 3.0 V-6 I would like th know what the actual reading is totally warmed up again at both idle & 2500 rpms.

from memory my gauge sits about a 1/4 warm and idling
and moves as i speed up
cruising on the highway at 2500 rpms somewhere between the 1/2 and 3/4 mark
i can check for sure later today but i think thats close

Thanks for the link! I feel a little better now. My 3.0 idles at 1/4 on the gauge & half way at 2,500 rpm's. I guess I can consider this to be normal with this engine?

Also, I am using 10-w30 oil, should I stick with it or would you recommend 10-40? I'm in Vegas so 115 degrees in the shade is quite common in the summer. I just wanna keep her running as long as possible.

you would want to stick with the heavier weight oil the warmer the temps are where you are the thicker the oil like for example when winter comes here in alabama i change to a thinner weight oil

Does your engine have an oil cooler? Because average oil temp is really the best measure for deciding on going to a thicker oil. I don't think the 2wd trucks had an oil cooler from the factory, but I've never owned one. That's what I used to do with my older vehicles, 10-w30 in the winter & 10-w40 in the summer, however my last vehicle required 5-w30 & it was very specific not to use anything heavier due to the tight tollerances of that particular engine (ford 4.6 liter 32 valve) I am guessing that the Toyota is more tollerant to using a heavier oil & it should be ok. If the majority agrees with this then that's what I will do.

Yes, I checked & it does have the factory engine oil cooler. I have also added a secondary plate type transmission cooler as well (it's an auto)

I was just concerned with the needle reading at around 1/4 at idle. Just wanted to make sure it was normal or acceptable. I wasn't sure if it was OK or if maybe the main bearings were worn (150k) I know that some engines run at a fairly constant pressure while others go up with the rpm's.

Keep in mind, oil pressure is kind of like blood pressure, you have to have some, but too much is not good either. Too much oil pressure could mean that there is a restriction somewhere and the oil isn't flowing good. So just obtaining high oil pressure is not the goal, you want good flow.

hmm... mine sits at about 1/8th while idling and about 1/4 at 3 grand...

any ideas? could it be because i have the timing retarded???

The Toyota oil gauges are notoriously innacurate. If you want to know the real oil pressure, get an aftermarket gauge or just stick a gauge into the side of the block.

Haha.... Mine sits at 0 most of the time. Might get up to 1/4 on a cold start.. Always been so. Gotta love that SR5 oil pressure gauge... Go aftermarket!

Yeah mine is in the Normal range on a cold start and like the first 5 minutes of driving, then drops to like 1/4 while driving and is at 0 at idle. I have about 200K on it and it makes no noise at all, plenty of oil moving around.
