As a result of this thread https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...ilters-215720/ I decided to install a second oil filter. Called up Toyota of puyallup and ordered part number 90404-19013 which is called an oil filter union. Had the part the next day. Picked up some Toyota oil Filters while I was there too.

Installation was pretty easy. Removed the plug with a 1 3/16" socket (didn't have the 30mm)

and installed the union. I put some blue locktght on the block side to be safe. You'll need a 14mm hex socket to install the union.

Installed new filters and filled with oil. Found that the truck now takes 5.5qts Of oil.
Overall it was pretty cheap and easy to install. More oil and double the filtering. Should make the motor last even longer.

Prices:
Union $9.58
4 toyota oil filters (buy 3 get one free): 20
total cost with sales tax: $33 and some change.

Nice - should have done this (and might still do it) on my VeeZee. It's not too efficient to cool oil with 200+ degree water anyway...

Lol yes i was just kidding about the jiffy lube part. I change my own oil... I never trust anyone else... Lol but if I did I would love to take the big runner in and ask for them to check the front diff and oil

and i agree, i doubt it would be very effective to cool hot oil, with hot water...

How is oil being pumped through the second filter? You only have one oil pump, right? So isn't the oil in the second filter just sitting in it, not getting pumped through?

Or am I just not figuring it out?

Well it gets pumped through the cooler..... or does the oil just sit in there too?

Oh, and btw I was not advocating for the dual oil filter mod or anything when I posted the other thread. It was a serious question- haden't seen it before until I got this runner. Didn't think it was stock, but what the heck, it's been running like that for 3k miles- until I decided to do the first oil change.

I inadvertantly stumbled on it. That is all.

 

Actually it's a time proven way to cool oils.

 

The Ford series filters (Fram PH8) equivalent fit perfect (assuming no frame clearance issues), are much larger and depending on the filter, much finer.

 

I still do not see the point or benefit of doing this modification. Maybe I am missing something.

 

Double the dirt holding capacity, and twice the filtering.. The oil goes thru 2x an much media on a normal cycle.. the micron rating is the same, but the passes thru the media increases..

It also increases oil sump capacity, which leads to cooler oil, and can allow for longer oil life.

This would be great for someone running synthetic and extended drain intervals.

 

Twice the filtering capacity. Drill another couple holes on the other side and put on 2 more oil filters and have four times the filtering capacity.

I still don't see it accomplishing anything for someone who changes their oil at proper intervals.

Most engine damage occurs with the smaller particles, where filters are less efficient. Even the best filters on the market are only 60% efficient at particles 7um in size. So if you have 2x the filter media you can catch more particles. Its the equivalent of running a single much larger filter, but that takes up room. It also provides more filter surface area for oil cooling.

The #1 reason oil must be changed is that it fills with contaminates, and the filters plug.

But hey, I'm just a guy who took a truck that came with 1 oil and 1 fuel filter, and now have 3 fuel filters, 2 oil filters, and a coolant filter....

I like filters :-)
