3.0 and 22RE redline

Just curious as to how far everyone has pushed these motors.

How many RPM's have you gotten up to on a 3.0?
How many RPM's have you gotten up to on a 22RE?

What happened?

How many miles when it happened?
Any mods that helped it survive, caused it to fail?
Would you ever go that high again?

I had my 89 V6 up to 80 mph in 3rd gear (manual) by accident one day. I was pretty trashed from a mt bike race, and had the music up. No visible or different engine sounds that I could tell. The original HG even held up.

I've pushed my 3vze to 5500, but rarely. It pretty much only happens when I'm trying to merge into traffic in the city. I only do it when I know she's good and warmed up as well. I've blown a head gasket due to gunning it before it was warmed up... mind you it was a honda civic and that changing it took all of an afternoon...

When I wind my 22RE to 4 grand it sounds like it's going to fly out of the truck, so I don't go any higher than that, and I rarely take it that high.

22RE 5500-6000 rev limiter kicks it at about 6200.

my old 22re had over 200k on it and i ran it to the rev limiter all the time it was in a modded 2wd 5 speed car it was fun and held up real well....i drove it that hard for 2 years before i sold it for my 4x4 4runner....with my 3.0 i only run it up real high if i am merging and have took it up to 6K a couple times....

The 22R-series has a long piston stroke, which results in high piston speeds per RPM. As such, it's never going to be a high-rpm motor.

There's absolutely no reason to rev it to redline unless it's significantly modified. If you're running it to redline to go "fast" - you're doing it wrong... Shift it earlier, keep it in the powerband and your ET will be better.

I have had both my 22RE's at revlimiter (6250ish), but above 5K you get diminishing returns...I will routinly pull long hills at 5K thou... Once in my 95 I had a headwind, and couldnt hold speed in 4th, so I put it in 3rd and set cruise at 5K.. drove that way for 3+ hours.. .no issues....

I usually shift at around 5K RPM's and it does just fine.

My exhaust leak makes it sound like the engine is about to blow past 4000rpms, so that's about what I usually take it to.

The 3.0 has been to the factory redline of the shift points of my transmission. I don't feel safe revving that motor at all. My old 22R is a different story. I tried to blow it up but could not do so. The highest was 7800 rpm. Those valves where floating like a mo-fo! Oh yeah, Toyota doesn't make really good valve seats I had to replace the head gasket at one time. I sent the head out to get it checked and the valve seats were whipped and the valves needed to be reseated. So if you like to rev the crap out of your 22R, be preparred to have a valve job done in the near future.

James
