22RE Power

I have a 22re and I was woundering if they are really that doggy. I can bearly hold 70 MPH on the highway and when I hit a hill its bearly holding 65 MPH. Driving on the roads around town I downshift to 2nd to get up a little hill and i got the pedal on the floor and it doesent do anything but make the rpms go up. I'm just woundering if they are really that slow or do I have a problem. Can anybody help me with this? Thanks

are we assuming that everything is still stock and you don't have larger tires or do you have larger tires and stock gears?

I've got 33x12.50's and stock gears on my 22RE and it was slow, never saw 5th. Just put a 261 cam in it and I actually can use 5th now. Still use 4th for hills though.

back in the day. on my old truck (2wd) i held 85-90 easy. i've seen this problem before: if you're on the skinny and it's going nowhere you may need a new clutch. i helped my friend replace the one in his car and that solved the problem.

you're 22re should have more power, that's my guess.....

22RE Power

I have 31x10.5 BFG Muds with stock gears. The door says that the stock size are 225x75 if that makes any differnce.

if your complaining about it now with 31's and are going to 33's, regearing is going to be a must. You can do a header, but gears will put you back to stock.

My 88 has a header a K&N filter charger and 4.88s with 33s. I can run 85-90 mph in 5th. Even with my 31s and the truck setting stock I could still do that. The 22Rs had a gunk build up problem in the intake. I would pull the entire intake and scrub it out with some carb cleaner. That improved mine alot. Whens the last time you put a fuel filter on it? How about a converter? Just some ideas.

yotasavg can you please explain to me how the clutch can be the problem of a under powered engine. I'm a ticketed HD and Motorpower mechanic and I've never heard of that, other than a clutch that slips which is very noticable or a heavier Fly Wheel and clutch assembly.

a 22re is really just that. It's not normal to have the RPM's increase without a speed increase, but it's a very common finding to have little power in a 4 cyl toyota if you have tires that are larger than stock. My toyota is very slow. i have 33X12.50's, 4.88 Yukons front and rear and a detroit truetrac in the rear. I just accepted the fact that it's slow, but powerful when I need it. I figure... what's the hurry?

i'm sorry if i wasn't clear. i was responding to the fact that he said when he hit the gas nothing changed but his rpms. in my friends car you'd be going 70 and hit the gas in 5th and nothing changed but rpms. after a new clutch, the power actually went from the engine to the tranny.

My 22-RE, from the factory, is listed at 104 hp.

With 30k wear and tear, i'd imagine i'm sitting square in the 90's.

It does just fine, hits fifth no problem, and will hold 70 no problem.

It just takes it's sweet time getting there.

The performance you describe sounds just like my 88 with 340K on the original motor/drivetrain. Will hold 70-75 on the freeway in 5th but doesn't like it and have to downshift to 4th on any kind of hill. I have 255/70/16's on it that are about 30" in diameter. Everything else is stock except I put an electric fan on it. Bought the truck from my bro for $500 and am in the process of replacing everything...
